Sorry to barge in but in time of conflict anyone is susceptible to performing discusting and unheard of things. The Americans are guilty of genocide at Mai Lein in Vietnam, the rebelious Greeks committed genocide at Tripolitsa against the Turkish and Jewish population, the French did terrible things in Algeria and the list grows longer and longer. During the EOKA struggle in Lefkonoiko, a simple man with six children named Savvas Menoikos was tied to a tree and stoned to death by a mob of EOKA supporters because they "thought" he was a traitor.
Conflict brings the beast out of man. Europe fought two world wars within the space of half a century. However, open societies have the will and capacity to review their past and take corrective measures. That is why we see France and Germany, terrible adversaries for centuries, bury the past and march hand in hand towards a better future.
