Dogs kill Mice

Postby Snad » Tue Jul 11, 2006 12:12 pm

I could not beleive it the other night, when my Springer Spaniel bitch came out from under the stairs with a mouse in her mouth.
She looked deciededly pleased with herself, until my husband tried to take it away from her, she wasnt going to let it go easily.

She has never done this before and I am very proud of her.

I didn't realise dogs kill vermin, I thought it was only cats. Has anyone else every heard of this??

yes snad, we have a small poodle terrier cross at the shelter who is on constant mouse alert and has caught many, her behaviour though does start to get on your nerves after a while as she moves all the dogs baskets out and scrabbles around all day, actually we all think she is obsessed and needs serious therapy, because its constant all day. And remember that many dogs were rat catchers, the miniature pinchers, manchester terriers and many others were bred for this job. I think the hunting instinct is in most dogs and that what your dog is doing, she has hunted down her prey and so why should she give it to you. Best to offer her some tasty morsel in exchange. And dont put down poison as she could ingest it herself if she catches one that has eaten some.

Thanks unique_earthling.

I would never put down poison, if fact I would never use chemicals on my plants. I'm organic. The weeds love it, but hey ho!!

I remember that the week before she caught it, she sat looking at the cupboard in the kitchen, of course we could see nothing, but she knew it was there. She would just sit for hours and stir at the cupboard, since she caught it, she hasn't done it. She is my very special girl, I hate vermin

My daft dog (giant schnauzer) would LIKE to catch rodents but hes useless!! His game at the moment is trying to pick hedgehogs up in his mouth and throw them around! Luckily they are rolled up in a ball and I put them over the wall - he just WONT leave them alone though!

My dogs are too lazy to catch a cold, 'Alfie' alias 'fat boy cant slim' is a rather rounded pinscher, and he takes no notice of anything, just sleeps and drags himself up to munch dinner then back to his plot. Image
this is Alfie in his favorite jammies at the shelter in winter.

This is 'Twinkle' with her daughter Star, that has now been rehomed and she has now been spayed, she isnt the brightest candle in the box, but she is very sweet. It took her a year before she recognised her name was Twinkle, but i love em to bits.......

My mums dog, after days of sctatching the floor by the fridge, caught a mouse. He was very humane i must say! Instead of biting it or playing with it he just stood on it killing it instantly and walked away!!! He is just so human sometimes it was like we would step on an ant! So by the looks of it dogs are this seasons cats LOL
