ANIMAL CRUELTY IN CYPRUS

Postby miltiades » Mon Jul 10, 2006 9:54 am

I was appalled to read the story about the two young army conscripts and their horrific act of setting fire to a stray cat. They are obviously very sick individuals and should have received 3 years in jail instead of 3 months.
Animal welfare has improved considerably since the days when I was a child in Cyprus , and in view of the absence of parental and educational guidance animals were treated with no respect what so ever.
The youngsters of Cyprus need to be constantly encouraged to be kind to animals , only in uncivilised cultures are animals treated with cruelty.

Yep I totally agree, However a lot of Cyprus's problems with regards to animal cruelty is down to the government. Lanate being the case in point. Anyone can buy this hidious stuff and poison innocent animals whenever they like :x

I agree that the young should be more educated with regard to animals, animals are dumb (as in can't speak for themselves) creatures who will love you no matter what.
These men should go to prison for a lot longer than 3 months IMHO. B*****ds

When was that? Is that recent? That IS pretty cruel. I am amazed they didnt get more time. On the other hand in a society like Cyprus its good they even got that.

Soldiers jailed for burning cat
By Alexia Saoulli

THE DEFENCE Ministry yesterday confirmed that two 19-year-old soldiers were jailed after they pleaded guilty to setting fire to a stray cat earlier this year.

The boys were tried in a military court and will serve out their sentence in Nicosia’s central prison.

Commenting on the case, Defence Ministry spokesman Yiannis Patsalides told the Sunday Mail: “The ministry has repeatedly condemned acts of such heinous cruelty.”

He added: “Of course they should be punished and that punishment should be strict so that they are made an example of in order to avoid any similar incidents from occurring in future.”

The incident occurred in mid March at an Athalassa army camp in the Nicosia district where the two conscripts were posted. Witnesses said that for no apparent reason the teens decided to set alight the cat, which had walked into their midst.

The brutality came to light after it was reported to military police by soldiers serving their national service with the two, and saw what had happened, but had been unable to stop it.
The boys appeared before a Nicosia military court on Thursday on charges of animal cruelty. The boys pleaded guilty and were sentenced to three months’ imprisonment. Sentencing, the judge referred to the crime as a “repugnant” incident.

The youths told the court they regretted what they had done and that they had acted thoughtlessly.

The pair’s military service, which had been due for completion next month, will be suspended during their incarceration.

This is the second time in six weeks that the army has had to imprison its conscripts for committing crimes of extreme violence against animals.

The first incident involved three soldiers who set fire to a stray dog about a year ago and watched it howl in agony as it slowly burned to death. The boys had taped the event on their mobile phone and then forwarded it to their friends.

well... just think if they treat an animal so brutishly, then how are they going to treat their wife and kids?

This proves that time in the army is time wasted doing nothing! Who are they kidding saying that soldiers are there to fight for a reason! Just Blah Blah blahhhh . No matter what Cyprus spends for military purposes this is a waste of public money and a waste of human time!

Yes Littlemiss, its scary to think that potential pychopaths are on the loose and holding a gun. Because if anyone can feel nothing for an animal and happily torture it, then they have serious mental problems. 3 months is certainly not enough and they need to be locked up...
