It sounds to me as well as Magnum is a bit weird and/or frustrated. Am I the only one relating "Magnum" not to Tom Selleck but to the amazing British band Magnum ????? One of the greatest rock band in History ! Check them out.... they're unfortunatley ugly so I hope "our" Magnum doesn't look like them !
This being said, I think she - I assume Magnum is a lady - raised an interesting question. I too have realized that there are some contractions in the way Cypriots are behaving and the way the look at their wife. It has surprised me for a long time to hear how "respectful" of their wife they are but as the mother of their children. Not that much as their wife/partner. Don't say anything bad about the mother of their children, never. You'll be in trouble if you don't respect her.... on the other hand, they are very quick to disrespect her and go to cabarets... They're not the only ones fair enough.
I think that the Cypriot society is still very old fashioned. In Europe, we would leave our parents at an early age and we openly have gilfriends/boyfriends. We go away on weekends with the full agreement of our parents and do not really have to hide anything from them. My feeling is that in Cyprus you still can only leave home to get married. What have you seen of life ? The first time you get out it's to found a family ! I strongly believe that men and women should make experiences before settling down. Do things for you, see the world, whatever... grow up as a person and then decide what you want to do in life.
If you settle with a partner once you have had these experiences, you will be more aware of the things you want for you. How can you know what love is if you never loved before ? How many of us have married with our high school sweetheart ? I guess not a lot. Why ? Because life has given us the opportunity to make our experiences.
In Cyprus, this is "officially" denied. It certainly happens, I am not naive. But you hardly will find a young couple living together if they're not married. Marriage is not necessarily as sacred in Cyprus as Cypriots would like it to be.
If you get married very young to a lady that you may love and have a family right after leaving your parents, I am not surprised that after a while you will want to see things you haven't yet... and could have if the society would be different.
You will always find rotten apples... but I think things could change a lot if youngsters would be released from some family pressure and given the chance to experiment (not only sexually of course).
On the other hand.... sons, mainly, are treated like Kings... so why leave the golden atmosphere of home where all they see is their mother cooking, washing, cleaning and doing everything for them ? It takes maturity to get away from this comfort and this way of doing is deeply anchored in the Mediterranean mentality. My mom used to do everything for me but when I was 21 I left home and started washing/cooking/etc.
