Super Mosquitoes of Athens

Postby sadik » Thu Jul 06, 2006 9:03 am

"Air pollution and cramped housing conditions in Athens, Greece, are creating a new breed of mosquitoes which are bigger, faster, and can smell humans from farther away. The super insects have color vision and detect humans from 25-30 meters, which is about 50% farther than the ordinary mosquitoe. Beating their wing 500 times a second provides them with extra speed, and the larger bodies (by 0.3ug) presumably allow larger bloodsucking capacity."

Now, I wonder when we'll get them in Cyprus.

yuk!! I saw on Turkish TV last night that there are HUGE ticks from Africa that have caused deaths in Turkey from internal bleeding!! They were massive - I reckon the horror stories are true - insects will take over the world.........

"According to the study, the mosquitoes of Athens have adapted to deal with air pollution and insect repellents"

why does every other creature evolve into something else because of the things we do? but we are still in the same state, i dont think we evolved into something better.

Bigger, faster, with better color vision and larger bloodsucking capacity! Thats not evolution, thats genetic revolution! WTF??

Smaller organism can change easier. And humans make changes themselves and they don't have to wait for nature ;)

Yesterday I saw a mosquito with an "S" on its chest. I think they might have arrived in Cyprus. Anybody has some spare Crypton that I can borrow? :)

I agree with Sotos about the evolution thing. I cannot even change my hair style, even with a ton of jel, let alone evolving a better color vision. This might be easier for smaller organisms with shorter life cycles and lots of off springs.

yeap. mosquitoes live for 1 or maximum 2 months! Imagine how many generations of mosquitoes change for each human generation!
