Cyprus livestock farming

Postby Dadalushe » Thu Jun 29, 2006 12:17 pm

On our various visits to Cyprus, we like to drive around to various places. We have seen quite a lot of goats, but we see hardly any cattle or sheep. This seems strange as lamb is used in so many dishes over there. I assume pigs are also farmed but they would be kept out of the sun. Is all the lamb imported?

Hi

There are many pig farms here and, as you say, many, many goats. Soemtime goat meat is substitued for lamb :-)

You will also see a few ostrich farms, but as far as cows go....

Ostrich meat! We used to be able to get that when we lived in Lincoln, but now we have difficulty finding it where we are now. Had some quite nice Ostrich burgers, and sausages. :D

There is an ostrich farm in Pissouri!

And of course plenty of goats – I had to rescue one from an empty swimming pool across the road from my house this morning! they’re quite frightening when they’re jumping about with those sharp horns…

You see a few cows around here too but the large farms all appear to be at the far East of the island.

That's useful, thanks Grump. We are often in the Pissouri area when we are in Cyprus. Can we buy from the farm? or do we have to find a retailer?

To be honest, I’ve driven past it but never actually been in there although the Euro Butcher in the village sells their meat.

I assumed you could just pick your bird and…
