Non Europeans working in Cyprus

Postby espriterrant » Fri Jun 30, 2006 2:29 am

It's very interesting your discussion on what it is like to work in Cyprus without a work permit, and moreover the immigrant experience.

I`ve worked legally in 3 countries and illegally in one, and in the last one, it wasnt much of a problem to hire foreign labour.

What I really want to know is if employers are willing to hire people without proper papers?

People and especially employers are greedy in Cyprus just like in all other places. They prefer to pay as little as possible. There are lots of illegal workers in Cyprus.

By definition, no-one can be certain, but Government figures suggest that 50% of foreign labour works here illegally.

How can anyone have faith in a government that cannot control it's tiny borders, that allows 50% of the foreign workforce to be illegal. Is the ROC in the pockets of the business community with special interest groups, that will allow such practices to continue. It is absolutely a criminal act by the ROC to allow this injustice with slave wages to take place. Another blunder by this incompetent government that allows such violation, which at the end, hurts it's own citizens, by having to compete with the foreign slave workers. It is high time for the ROC, to round up all the illegal workers, paid them one years salary in advance, before sending them all to their home countries, to free up the jobs for the citizens of Cyprus, with a living wage. If they can't achieve this little problem, then I should not expect anything else, specially a solution to the Cyprus problem.

In my opinion it is big business and powerful unions (especially public servants) who control Governmnet policy. The Governmnet members do not want to lose their status and lucrative positions, so they appease all pressure groups - particularly the public sector voting lobby.

'We dont want immigrants living here but we want them working here'
is a popular attitude.

My sentiment exactly Kikapu. If the employers here paid the correct wage then surely all cypriots that have expatrioted to other countries would return home... Then there would be no need for foreign workers.
The govt should step up and do their job...............

How can we expect criminals to solve the crimes that they are committing, and these are the same people that represent Cyprus to the world. Just one more crime along with the other ones.!!
