So coming from britan where the summer lasts an impressive week or so (haha) are there any tips on dealing with the soaring tempretures in cyprus!!!!

Temp reached 36 here the other day, couldnt imagine anything more, although when I came to Cyprus last year in Sept it was early 40's.
When you are on holiday its ok, you find yourself wanting to sleep continously and becoming quite irratiable.

Do you really acclimatise to this kind of heat.

It must be extremley difficult for builders.

Does anyone worry that with Global warming etc temp will continue to increase?

You do acclimitise to the temperature to a certain extent; you get up early and finish shopping/gardening etc by 10am and do not restart until 4pm. Have a siesta every afternoon, cool your rooms with the a/c and keep by the pool.

At night, if I cannot sleep, I will get up and swim, whatever the time; even last night I was laying on a sunbed at 2am to be cool!

If you work, then life is not easy in July and August - unless you are in Nicosia, when it is IMPOSSIBLE!

It was only for a couple of weeks at the hottest time of the year that the heat used to get to me, sometimes I would have 4 or 5 showers a day (I didn't have a pool). I put a Tv out on the corner of the patio and used to sit outside at night, sometimes I even slept out there. It was really nice. As summer seems to be deserting us again in the UK I would gladly swap for the heat of Cyprus again.

i didnt find last year too bad, so i guess you do get used to it, and i had no air con, and was in a one bed flat, very small, this year i do have the luxury of a/c and a slightly more airy flat. The key is do as little as possible all day, builders usually get time off in august, so they dont work through the main heat, even my husband has 3 weeks off in august and he is a carpenter. Im dreading august this year being 8 months pregnant at the time, so when you are here struggling with the heat just tell yourself it could be worse you could be littlemiss lol.

Drinking a lot of cold water during the day will help(carry always a bottle of cold water with you).Buy good sunglasses and a hat to wear when you are out . Also buy good summer clothing and sandals to wear.

Stay indoors at midday and go out late afternoons when the cimate cools!

If you follow these you will be fine.

cheers guys, .
littlemiss I dont envy you, I wish you well. At least you have the thought thats its nearly over and you can enjoy all the hard effort.
I have 2 children but had them in winter so was not heavily preg during the english summer, so it was managable.

I am connsidering trying for another child in the next few years once settled in cyprus, so would be interested to know how you found the system, in regards to pre natal , birth and postnatal care.

My 2nd child I opted for a home both which was great, I wonder if it is an option in cyprus.
Over here in the UK, my midwifes were very pro home birth however I know friends who;s midwifes were not very confident in doing them

Keep us updated

stay there!!!!!!! if i ever have another child i will do my best to have it in the uk!!! I find the language barrier a problem, even tho the doctors speak english its not great and its hard to build a relationship of trust with them for this reason. Also for good care it costs a fortune! im 6 months along and have found most of my answers on the internet not from my doctor. I wouldnt want to play this game in cyprus again, if i do i would bring a doctor from england lol. Im not sure they have even heard of home birth here you are lucky to get away with even a natural birth, they seem to be big fans of c sections. to be discussed on my next visit. will let you know how it goes cos im going to ask about things like birthing pools, policies on pain relief, i also would like to see the area where the labour and delivery will be. Hey and i will be checking to see if the a/c works LOL

You do acclimatize to the heat as your blood thins it has taken me a couple of years before this happened, i work a physical job from 9 till 5, and drip with perspiration but dont feel ill with it, just hot and sticky... Not an attractive sight, but hey who cares, sweat wont kill you... just makes you look a drip... hehe

Oh poor you littlemiss...... ok I think you put me off.
I know that members of my family have come back here to give birth.
Dont know how that works though, if the uk hospitial has none of your details, over here you have a pregancy book that goes with you to every pre natal midwife visit and that is theie bible. you MUST have it with you when the time comes as well.
Is your blood pressure and everything checked and the babys heart monitered?

def let me know how it goes.

I take it you do not have midwife visits or pre natal classes answering all your questions and giving advice. these go through all the pain relief options, talk through the birth etc.

Also you get a tour of the labpur ward and given all the numbers to ring etc if you go into labour or have any questions.
