Postby littlemiss » Mon Jun 19, 2006 8:08 pm

Heres one for you guys................ would it be cheaper in the winter to use air-con that heats or to have central heating fitted? If central heating oil or gas, which is cheaper?

Personally, I go for a gas heater. In my old place, I used to light up a log fire!

we were going to have a fire built in our house but have recently change the contacts and bought a bigger house that is almost finished, so now we are looking at alternatives, im not a fan of the gas heaters, sometimes they can be a bit fumey and i havent got the courage to light them myself incase i blow myself up! I know ridiculous but im a woman anything is possible! so its either A/C or central heating, i just know nothing about the cost of either.

The great thing about central heating is that it covers all areas – bathrooms, staircases, halls, etc. whereas split a/c units are only in the main rooms.

So, c/h probably costs more (although the split a/c units aren’t very efficient) but gives better overall comfort IMHO.

As for gas or diesel, I think the cost works out about the same although for a large house you need quite a large gas tank. Ours is just 500 litres which is too small for our house and lasts just a couple of weeks.

Hi Littlemiss

Whether aircon units will provide heat for you in winter will depend largely on the winter air temperature where you live, if you are up in the mountains -forget it.
Another consideration for/against aircon you will need to look at how much power the units need to run, if you only have single phase electricity supply you may need to upgrade to a three phase supply.

Currently LPG gas heating is the cheapest to run and may become even cheaper if the rumoured supply of natural gas from Syria becomes reality.

I installed gas ch in our house and also have a woodburner, this works well for our situation at 600m above sea level.

Not at all… it is about 320m² although about 70m² is below ground and doesn’t require heating. :wink:

LPG = Liquid Petroleum Gas.

Gas in other words but there is no mains gas here so you have to have it delivered by tanker – in our case every two weeks during the winter.
