My brother was 2 in 1974 and my father had to go fight. Where we lived there wasnt too much going on and even though both sides were scared they werent fighting each other. MY mother talks about how my uncle was telling my brother that his daddy is going to go kill the Turks and come back(I have spoken about this uncle before he is an ass) and when my dad was about to get into the truck that was picking them up he gave my mom a hug and while he was hugging my brother, my brother asked him to not Kill Mohammed (my grandfather's friend from work) because he really likes him and then he said actually why dont you stay home with us and eat some spaghetti killing people is wrong. Every night until my dad came home, my brother was praying to god his daddy was ok and that he did not have to kill anyone today.

Hand on heart I'm very touched by your beautiful story. You must have a beautiful family with high values. I would be proud to be living side by side with GC's like you and your family.

I hope nobody in your family got hurt in 74.

No one died or got hurt physically but my father had nightmares until the day he died. He refused to go to church and considered himself a sinner. Wars touch everyone.

Poor man, must have been absolute hell for him to go through what he did.

God bless his soul and may he rest in peace. :(

Andri_cy,

Perhaps your father took some secrets with him to his grave, as to whether he killed anyone or witnessed bad treatment on the TC's by others. I don't blame him for not telling his family if these things did happened. Sounds like he was a compasionate man, but forced into a situation he really did not want to be in. It must have ate him up inside a lot.

Kikapu I am sure that he did take some secrets with him to the grave. I think this is a prime example of soldiers doing what they are told no matter if they like it or not. My father was not a saint, but I am sure he hated killing people.
My brother is now in the army but my father had strong objections when my brother decided to make that his life. I think that at some point my father before he died, told my mom a lot of the things he saw or did, and she hasnt been her old self since. War changes people, whether they were involved in it or not. My whole family is maybe different today than it could have been, because of my father's demons. I think in 1974 we all lost and none of us gained anything.
