Personal experiences of intercommunal fighting, the truth

Postby Natty » Thu Jun 15, 2006 12:38 am

Hi, I was just wanderring whether there was anyone on this website who wishes to give there personal experiences of the intercommunal fighting? I'm intrigued by this period, I know that GC's and TC's were killed, but was it just by irregulars on both side or was there widespread hate throughout the Island. I've always been told that in most cases GC's and TC's lived together quite happily......

ahem...sevgul is a woman.
but i always make such mistakes with turkihs names as well

yes i read the book.
she refers to a number of stories she collected that were published in the tc newspaper yeni duzen , and the gc alitheia.
its not a historical book. it doesnot follow a certain chronological order.. it doesnot concentrate only on the pain of one community.
its mostly personal stories of people who lost relatives either in the intercommunal fightings , or during the war , or were executed by their own nationalists , or people who have relatives that are still missing are still missing.

another journalistic book , about the 1963 time is makarios drousiotis book "i proti dihotomisi" (its in greek) . it is mostly a book with facts about that period, and at points the interpratation of those by drousiotis. it is more historical (even though i dont like that term for drousiotis books). he doesnot present those times through personal experiences (for that you should go for sevguls book) , if thats what you are mostly interested in

Natty I dont have personal experiences, just what I was told by my Grandparents and parents. They used to work alongside with TC's and then on the weekends they would even get together and have dinner together-just like family. I hear my family elders talk about it sometimes and say how they wonder what their friends are doing now and wether there is a way to find them if they are still alive.

I can write a whole chapter of my personal experience from a 8 year old childs point of view, as how thing were in Nicosia ( Kücük Kaymakli) for me and my family, just before the the 1963 conflict, and the next 6 months. I'll make a rough draft, and if it's too long, perhaps I can sread it out over couple of weeks as not to bore people with a long story all at once. I'll bore you over a long period instead.!!
