Turkish cemetery in Larnaca

Postby Tim » Tue Jun 13, 2006 3:17 pm

I've holidayed in Larnaca several times in recent years. Last year I walked round the Turkish cemetery at the south end of Larnaca. I noticed that there were several recent graves (dates in last few years), and indeed 2 women were tending one of them. I just wondered who would be likely to be buried there now? How would a Turkish funeral be arranged in Larnaca?

I'm just curious - no direct interest.

Well there is a big muslim temple I believe in Larnaca. I also think that there are still not a lot but a few TCS living there. I suppose all you have to do is go to the mosque or whatever it is called in English and ask about arranging a funeral.

Tim, thats a good question...

as andri said, there are indeed a handful of TC's living in larnaca and other southern regions since the opening of the borders...

another reason why there may be TC's buried in larnaca is that there were many TCs living in larnaca before the war and was actually the first place the ottoman empire landed in their invasion in the 1500s against i believe the venetians...dont hold me to that as i always get the venetians and lusignans mixed up...because of the many TCs previously residing in larnaca, it wouldnt be far fetched that one would like to be given to land they were born in when they pass away...i myself live in london and one day would like nothing more than to be buried in Morphou (to the GCs) or Guzelyurt (as it is known to the TCs)
