Hi there,
As diabetes is very close to my heart i can answer this question for you.
Cyprus has an excellent diabetic awareness system in place in every city town and rural village on the island. As in the Uk the help available depends on the type of diabetes that you may have (ie insulin dependency etc..). My father has been a diabetic for most of his adult life, and until he came to the island just over 25 years ago was forever having problems with his health in the Uk. As both my parents are invloved in the medical profession here in cyprus, my mother is heavily involved with the Cyprus Diabetic Association and is one of the leading heads of the association within Larnaca. The CDA is internationally respected and has recently been granted the task of trialling pioneering new drugs, and glucose machines within cyprus, something which again my mother has been heavily involved in. This scheme has been a massive success and Cyprus dare i say it is HEADS further in diabetes awareness than many other European Countries. Indeed every month (or 2?) the CDA represents Cyprus(my mother is ALWAYS travelling!) at many international conferences on diabetes held all over the world, allowing the CDA to be at the forefront of technological innovations and research into the condition, which the information is then passed onto the association in Cyprus which implements all neccesary information into the job it does with diabetics in Cyprus.
Whenever someone is diagnosed with diabetes within Larnaca Hospital anyways, he or she is referred to the association who will help you come to terms with the new way of life as well as prepare you and assist you with all the neccesary information and clinical procedures now needed. This you would NOT get with the NHS instead they would tell you to see your GP who in turn would pass you off with millions of bits of information in the form of leaflets which would leave you confused, or so i hear from many people who have found the NHS less than helpful towards them when diagnosed with this condition. I have seen many people retire to cyprus with diabetes or develop it whilst here, and they are all living happy normal lives under a diabetic awareness scheme which in my opinion is SECOND TO NONE in Europe.
I Hope this helps. Should you need any more information(as i am new!) please dont hesitate to email me(this you can do through the admin?) and i will be more than happy to put you in touch with the association who can help you in any way shape or form you may require.
