are british people welcome to live in cyprus

Postby AL » Thu Jun 08, 2006 10:03 pm

 I have been reading quite a bit on the forum and it seems to me there is a lot of resentment towards british people, is it just me being too sensitive or is there a genuine problem? I am in the process of buying a new home with the intension of living and working in cyprus. I have been coming to cyprus for nearly 20yrs, I love the place and the people and never had a bad word to say about any of the cypriot people I've had the fortune to meet and talk to.Cyprus is now part the EU, so I dont understand the hostility towards us. I know there is a bit of history between the UK and Cyprus, but that should remain in the past and we should try to look the future instead. :( :?

There is no such hostility. My wife , English as apple pie , spends a lot of time in Cyprus with our 1/2 English 1/2 Greek Cypriot daughter and has done so for more than 20 years . Cyprus is fat too attached to Britain to be hostile , critical yes , but hostile .NO

I know what you are all saying, I love cyprus and everything to do with it, but I have read a few topics on the forum mostly concerning the same couple of people who for some reason have a chip on their shoulders. many thanks to you all................

AL, Cypriots do not have a problem with people from the UK. What many of us have a problem with is the policies of the UK government for Cyprus that have been hostile for the most part of history and continue to be hostile today.

If you show understanding for the reasons that Cypriots do not like the UK policies (or if you just avoid the topic) then you will have no problem.

If you come here and you are loud defending the unfair UK policies for Cyprus, you would be treated in the same way that you would treat a foreigner coming to your country and supporting the actions of Al Qaeda against your country.

Cypriots are nice but demand the same respect that you demand. If you go around offending people and being disrespectful then you will receive the same in return.

Piratis you are absolutely correct in your assessment.
We are in unison when it comes to apportioning blame ,and yes successive British governments have sided with Turkey and have indeed shown a level of hostility towards Cyprus which bearing in mind the close ties that exist between our nations, don't forget that over 250 thousand Cypriots are living in the UK , this hostility is unjustified.
The only point I would like to make here is that Britain , the government , is looking after its interests first and foremost , therefore supporting Turkey is in their interests , and this is how the world has developed through out history.
What we can do is not sit back and accept it but constantly develop political bridges with the UK IN ORDER NOT TO BE SEEN OURSELVES AS A HOSTILE NATION.
Your comparison with support in the UK for Al Qaeda is very valid.

BRITISH GOVERNMENT ARE PRO TURKISH

Postby lysi » Fri Jun 09, 2006 10:09 am

Some british who live in the free areas of cyprus still think and act like its a british colony, remember many cypriots were hung, murdered & tortured by the british army & police in the 1950s.
Also it was the british government that caused most of the problems in cyprus & also the british government have done nothing to end the illegal turkish occupation because they are pro-turkish. Also cypriots want the british bases removed, but dont have the guts to do anything about it.

We have lived here for 3 years....we chose to live in a Cypriot Community, we buy all our shopping locally, support the local tradesmen and support the school events, my husband has been welcomed into the Cafeneon where he has become quite the tavli & cardplayer. We have been treated with the utmost kindness and friendliness.

You have to remember that you are moving to a country that is not yours, and you must respect the customs and way of life of the people, even if somethimes they jar with yours........Cyprus is not England with sun and should never become so.

We have english friends and Cypriot friends and socialise with both....I have becoome quite outspoken at English events when the enivitable Whinging starts I simply say I hear Spain is nice why not go there!

If you treat the Cypriots with respect they will treat you likewise and you will gain much. In three years we have never had to buy fruit or vegetables, if our neighbours see us with a lot of garden rubbish a tractor and trailer automatically turns up to take it away and we are always being brought samples of home cooking. After 10 years of living in our house in the UK we didn't know our neighbours names now we go to all of our neighbours weddings and childrens parties.

Are British people welcome in Cyprus........Yes of course as long as they remember that Cyprus belongs to the Cypriots and is no longer a Colony.
