EOKA 55-59

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Postby Piratis » Fri Jun 09, 2006 12:18 am

Yes I agree, just like the NAZIS.

The Nazis were invading foreign countries and they were using the practices of land grabbing and ethnic cleansing. In Czechoslovakia they even used the excuse of "protecting the German minority" to invade.
They are very similar to what Turkey does, and not to EOKA which was the exact opposite since they were fighting against the colonialists.

Why am I not suprised with your comments Pilati????

Why should you be?

tut...tut..tut..tut..tut..tut.......so much misery...... blame everything on the british army

So the British had Cyprus as a colony, they were hanging people that wanted the liberation of Cyprus, and they have no blame?
What are the British troops doing 1000s of miles away from their country and their own business other than oppressing and exploiting the world for their own benefit?

As far as Piratis comments on Grivas being an idiot , let me disagree , the man was not a Nazi collaborator , neither was he an idiot. He believed that Cyprus , his birthplace , should be part of Greece and not a British colony.

The problem is not that he wanted Enosis and the end of the British rule of Cyprus. The problem with him was that instead of focusing on this target he had also committed crimes against innocent people simply because of their ideology.

grivas was a nationalist and an idiot. all the way.

his group in greece known as "X" was collaborating with the nazis. even their dress code was more or less like the nazis. when ELLAS surrounded athens , they were also about to capture grivas at a place in athens called thision. his ass was saved by his new pimps and the new occupation force of greece - namely the english.

as for his political abilities he couldnot even see beyond his nose. only an idiot would make a struggle at the cost of hundreds of human lives , only to receive half of what harding proposed without a struggle and on top , considering himself as a "liberator". it is THE absolute stupidity.

moreover his acts at the village of kofinou should be enough reason to hung him from the balls. his exact words were : we will enter the village and we will not leave alive not even a lame chicken".

you cannot consider yourself a cypriot and be an admirer of grivas. its a paradox. the two just dont fit together.

CRAP CYPRUS GOVERNMENT

Postby lysi » Fri Jun 09, 2006 9:55 am

Many cypriots died trying to get rid of the british and gain there independence, but the cypriots today dont do anything about the british military bases that are on cyprus soil.
The cypriots and there crap government are too worried and shy to take action to remove the british bases, if the cyprus government cant get rid of the bases then how the hell will they get rid of the turkish occupation ?

I think the brits did open schools in cyprus and brought teachers from greece. but it turned boomerang bc the teachers had the megali idea in their heads. ofcource that doesnot mean that the english should have stayed. but if it is something they did we should at least recognize it.

Camus appeal for EOKA captive sells for €15,000

Postby Sotos » Sat Jun 10, 2006 11:42 pm

It was sold for 15.000 Euro!

A TWO-PAGE letter written by French author and philosopher Albert Camus asking for clemency for a Cypriot EOKA member sentenced to death for murder, was bought at auction by the lawyer of an anonymous Cypriot businessman who had an agreement with the Cyprus Embassy in Athens.

Speaking to the Cyprus Mail yesterday, the Embassy’s Deputy Head of Mission Salina Shambos said that the document would be donated to the EOKA Museum in Nicosia.

“We struck up the agreement so we could back out of the bidding,” she said. “It would have been illogical for both of us to bid for the same document as this would have driven up its price.”

The bidding began at 5,000 euros with the businessman eventually securing the letter for 15,000 euros. There was one other bidder, via telephone. “We do not know who this other person was, but we overheard conversations conducted in French,” said Shambos.

The renowned Greek auction house, Petros Vergos, was in charge and also auctioned off 400 other items, including rare writings of European and Asian authors published in the 18th and 19th century. Some of the bidding started at 30,000 euros.
Cypriot ambassador to Greece George Georgis said that the letter, “shows Europe’s interest in the struggle of Cyprus at the time”.

It had been in the hands of Greek private collector Nikos Spanos.
“It was written in 1956, two days before Michael Karaolis’ execution and was an appeal by Camus, who had heard about the case. He related Cyprus’ struggle for independence with that of Algeria,” said the ambassador.

Camus was born in Mondovi, Algeria to a French Algerian settler family.
Georgis went on to say: “The document is invaluable to Cyprus and we are delighted that it has been bought to be delivered to the EOKA liberation struggle museum. In it, Camus, who was a very famous French intellectual and Nobel Prize winning author, expressed his support for Karaolis and Cyprus’ struggle for liberation and self-determination.

“After all these years, this document and all Camus’ efforts vis-à-vis Cyprus’ struggle will now be known. For this reason, Cyprus should honour Camus.”
The head of the Museum, Yiannakis Demetriou, said he was delighted to be receiving the document, but could not give a timeframe as to when it would be put on display.
Karaolis was a Cypriot guerrilla fighter, the first man executed by the British colonial authorities in the EOKA struggle, which took place from 1955-1959.

In June 1955, as part of the EOKA campaign to drive out the British and unite the island with Greece, Karaolis blew up his place of employment. Unwilling to kill any co-workers, he set the timer on his bomb to go off on a Sunday.

In August, 1955, Karaolis, along with two EOKA companions, executed Greek Cypriot Special Branch police constable Poullis in Ledra Street, Nicosia.
Karaolis became a wanted man and was later arrested by colonial police.
He was tried and convicted of PC Poullis’ murder and was executed by hanging on May 10, 1956, along with Andreas Demetriou.

As far as I was aware the are NO British bases on RoC soil - the 1960 agreement specifically excluded them from the handover. The 'crap government' has no power over the BSB's and certainly can't 'get rid of them'. neither will the 'Cyprus government' get rid of the Turkish occupants in the TRNC - It'll take greater force than the RoC can deliver - perhaps entry to the EU might be a carrot on a stick? - but I'm sure the Turks have already thought of that... :?
