i dont get it alexis...im actually confused...dont take this the wrong way but it seems u are defending the point that there is a need for equality....but that this is brought about by majority/minority?
i dont think GC's would be punished if given equal say as the TC community...they would simply be...equal?
i think the problem is that i am thinking more macro and u are thinking more micro...u want a micro-equality whereby every man has an equal voting influence as the next and i would like a macro-equality wherby the two communities as a whole have equal voting influence...
but like i said before...i dont see a secure future for TC's living as a minority in our own land where anything we say can be over ruled...
i dont believe there will never be another fascist grivas or samson etc...afterall, they were not the first and only...
Let me make my position clearer. I completely agree with political equality for the TC community. But I believe the communities are the entities that are politically equal and that at the micro level the people should all have equal rights. So at the top level we have equal numbers of senators etc... but at grass roots level we all get one vote in local elections etc...I won't go into details because this is not the sort of thing I am good at but mechanisms, similar perhaps to those expressed in the Annan Plan will probably do. This is all fine, but the TC community then gives up the TRNC and share it's administered region with GCs, this is the compromise that is made. Of course this means GCs living amongst TCs again.
My main point is that as majority/minority there is a fine line between living in harmony and not. So of course safeguards should be in place so that no Grivas or Samson can come to power, but the majority should not be held to ransom just because of what happened in the past. Things happened in the past that both sides wish won't happen again, so my point is that it's very one-sided to pin-point the blame on the GC community in order to justify partition or exclusion of the GC community.
So, in conclusion I do actually agree with what you say, what really wound me up was the following quote:
what u guys must understand is that there is mistrust there because of the past and it was kicked off by EOKA B, a gc militia...its wrong to say the gc's were equally killed as 1- u will have majority rule anyway and there is no threat of u being mistreated...and 2- tc's didnt attack the gc's until tc's were attacked...yes gc's were killed as well as tc's...but what do u expect? no retaliation? to sit back without fighting back? we are a peaceful people but our turkish genes have always made us warriors...we will fight when necessary...but we will not take the risk by giving gc's majority rule incase extremists do pop up once more...there is always the threat of extremists to both sides...equal status protects us from this threat...what could the gc's do if tc's had majority rule and an extremist party came to power? or even just had an influence politically? we'd all be f*cked...
Which is exactly the kind of thing we need to get away from. Ok, I understand that your main point was that as a minority TCs find it hard to trust GCs, all I was pointing out is that you can also start abusing your status as a minority by asking for more and more demands simply because you are the minority. As I've said before I don't believe that this is happening now but I would rather we agree to political equality because it's right and we respect each other as communities as opposed to agreeing to it because GC are a majority who it must be assumed are going to try and screw over the TC community at every opportunity. The same works the other way rtound, the GC community should not play the 'majority' card to get its way.
