On Tuesday 30th May at 8.00 pm Channel 5 intend to show a programme "Property Developing Abroad: Northern Cyprus" stating in the TV guides "Nottingham couple Carl and Jane buy an abandoned property in northern Cyprus, hoping to increase its value by £20,000 in 10 weeks. Presented by Gary McCausland".

Obviously, much of the property in occupied northern Cyprus belongs to Greek Cypriots who abandoned their properties and fled for their lives in 1974 when Turkey invaded Cyprus. Turkey still occupies one third of the island. Channel 5 is promoting the exploitation of stolen assets by making and proposing to broadcast this programme. By implication this is aiding and abetting invasion, occupation, theft and the denial of human rights to the Greek Cypriot legal owners of the properties by promoting the concept that this is legitimate "property development abroad".

We as owners of properties in occupied northern Cyprus must complain and protest, we must apply pressure for the cancellation of this programme, we must make our voice heard and email, phone and write to Channel 5 immediately. Hopefully, if they receive a large negative response to their proposed programme they will not broadcast it.

Dear Piratis, I refer you as extreme, as in no matter what is said, you always say its so and so's fault, but never allow GC's to take blame for anything. I just think that a lot of your words are more harmful then good for Cyprus as a whole as you spend so much time defending against what people say rather than contributing towards a peaceful solution. miltiades defends GC's as well, but does it in a tactful, fair way. Its very difficult to argue with miltiades as he/she makes so much sense.

The TMT and another extremists that murdered innocent GCs pre 1974 + the Turkish invasion which had as a result 6000 dead and 200.000 refugees.

There were deaths and refugees on both sides. I have a lot of family that just disappeared between 1965 and 1970, My Granddad’s brother and his two sons disappeared in 1968 while going to get some bread from a nearby village, they were never found. At least 50% of my cousins were from South Cyprus, they had land that was with them for hundreds of years, which they lost. I told you before how my Grandma’s home and land had been knocked down and clubs built in its place. So please don't make out the Turkish have been causing all the suffering. All my Greek Cypriot friends have just as equally sad stories, but instead of us dwelling on it, we get on with life. I don't have any Turkish friends in London; about 70% of my friends are Greek Cypriots. Most of my opinions and views were gained from my GC friend’s families, so I hear all kinds of stories from the past.

We all have some bad feelings for what happened in 1974 and all the people who died, got raped, lost their homes. That is something that a lot of people arent forgetting. But the people who lived through it like my parents and my grandparents find it so easy to just want everything back the way it was and miss it. I think that the 2nd generation is the one that is bitter. I think the 3rd generation is looking back to peace and love between us again. At least I hope so.

andri_cy, I think you are very right. Most young Cypriots I meet nowadays are very up for peace and love between us. But unfortunately although most 3rd Gen Cypriots are for peace there are still quite a few 3rd Gen's that spend too much time with their bitter parents who encourage their children to hate the opposite side. As long as we all work together to promote peace, and to forgive and forget the past, we Cypriots will succeed.

The complaint from the rest of the family regarding the Greeks in Cyprus or Greece, comes down to " we just don't trust them"

Kikapu, I get the same thing from my family in North Cyprus. It's strange, it seems to be a common thing I hear from Turks in Cyprus, that they do not trust them. I have tried to re-assure a few of my cousins that they should put their pre-conceptions of the past behind them, but its very difficult. A lot of them don't feel they can put trust in people that constantly talk about LAND, as they feel they have lost land as well, but all they want is to be treated equally and to live their lives. Example: This stupid program that everyone is upset about, that is about buying in North Cyprus. I personally don't want the British to buy property in Cyprus until there is a resolution, as there are hundreds of Cypriots that should come first, but there is hundreds of British buying in South Cyprus everyday. They have over populated Spain and France, now they want Cyprus

My point is if you haven't seen the programme how do you know what the content is?Are we not capable of making our own minds up without censorship?Surely we should be allowed to decide for ourselves without any threat to GC properties in the north. The programme may well discourage buying in the north.

Bill,

The whole point of this 'Property Developer' series is supposedly to show how easy it is to make money from property developing in Europe, so it is unlikely to discourage people from buying in the north.

In truth the series so far has been very disingenuous, erroneously referring to increased post refurb valuations as profit when we know that the deal isn't done until the money is in the bank.
