Channel 5 show about Occupied Cyprus

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Postby Piratis » Fri Jun 09, 2006 12:08 am

Piratis we appear to be going around in circles you read but you do not understand...try hard very hard to absorb what I am saying as it will help you understnand that what we want is not that extreme for a community which has gone through our history, the trust is non exisdent and needs to be addressed not tossed to one side like its not importnant this only had the opposite of the desired effect and stimulates even further mistrust.

What history have your gone through? Compare that with the history we have gone through and tell me why you should be rewarded on our expense?
Sure, the trust issue needs to be addressed, but your way of addressing it - violating the human and democratic rights of 100s of thousands of people, not only it does not address it but it creates more mistrust and conflicts.

Did we the people have a say?

Are you saying that you do not have democracy? Are you saying that you the people (the majority of you) support the UN resolutions about respect of sovereignty of RoC, illegality of "trnc" etc? Are you sure?

You can choose any version of human rights and democracy and hand it to the GCs to administer our past experience and current events of the GC mentality towards us gives us no confidence in putting our future in your hands.

First of all you would give it to Cypriots to administer and not to GCs. Secondly, you are again using a tiny part of history to demonise and commit crimes against GCs, forgetting your own history and your own actions that were much worst.

You are comparing apples with pears again, joining the EU and uniting with Greece are 2 totally different issues.
If you are forced to do anything against your will you fight back with all your strength this is human nature Piratis.

So the one who loses the elections should fight back with all his strength to take power then?

Piratis you still dont get the big picture, the fact that we were unable to trust each other in the past created the 1960 agreements which you oppose today as being unbalanced but ironically cling onto so dearly, you still do not realize that the trust issues have not progressed or improved one iota from the 1960s. If we had off progressed many of the issues we argue about today would not be issues, do you realize this? The rejection of the Annan plan is just another log on the fire of mis-trust which continually appears to burn even stronger today in 2006, where people are supposed to be more educated, forgiving and compromising but unfortunately for us this is a very rare commoditity.
The issues which you consider as encroaching on your human rights and democracy have to negotiated and to this dialogue is essential, if there is no dialogue between our communites each side will continue to put those logs on the fire of mis-trust in a vain attempt to score points or keep the masses happy. Its time you to took steps like us to apply pressure on your leaders to come up with solutions not reverting to the blame game which they obviously prefer as they feel not negotiaiting will allow them to use the EU leverage to extract their demands. Playing that game can also have dire consequences and may result in a situation which you will not be to happy with just like back in 1974.

Are you saying that you do not have democracy? Are you saying that you the people (the majority of you) support the UN resolutions about respect of sovereignty of RoC, illegality of "trnc" etc? Are you sure?

Dont play word games you are not stupid and you know what the situation is in the north. We have taken steps to change our leaders what have you done?

First of all you would give it to Cypriots to administer and not to GCs. Secondly, you are again using a tiny part of history to demonise and commit crimes against GCs, forgetting your own history and your own actions that were much worst.

Your actions are recent and contibuted greatly to create where we are today, its like saying i beat you up 300 years ago so your sitting on me and trying to control me today is warranted, 2 wrongs dont make a right.
One of our major fears more than land, settlers or army is the right to have a say in how we are governed, we do not want to be exposed to GC domination as your numerical numbers allows you the comfort of knowing that you will in time if left to your own devices reduce us into a minority status in a GC state. This is exactly why we demand the rights and safety valves that will deter GC domination and control over our community. Our insecurity stems from your own actions, why do you not try to improve those issues?

So the one who loses the elections should fight back with all his strength to take power then?

This is human nature and can be seen the world over. ıf you are refering to war then I am 101% certain that if you were given the power today you woudl not hesitate for one moment to annialate the north, this is just another log on that fire.

Viewpoint , I don't generally reflect on past issues and neither do I like to bring percentages , majorities and minorities into my postings. Being what I think a Cypriot primarily then all Cypriots are equal irrespective of "ethnicity " .There are however certain facts that all of us have to take into consideration and take into account if a solution leading to the unification of Cyprus is found.
I stated much earlier that I would have no problem if the President of the ROC was not Greek Cypriot , but was the leader of a party the represented all communities and was elected as the leader of this party and this party had the support of the majority and won the elections. This scenario is years away but the idea of multi community political parties developing is and can be a future reality.
As far as Annan plan and the referendum result is concerned , I doubt whether much permanent capital can be made by the Turkish Cypriots saying yes to it. The fact of the matter is that this plan was put to the people and the overwhelming majority rejected it. We know the reasons it was , lets work towards the necessary reforms to make it acceptable. And yes , it is imperative that the majority accept it.

On Tuesday 30th May at 8.00 pm Channel 5 intend to show a programme "Property Developing Abroad: Northern Cyprus" stating in the TV guides "Nottingham couple Carl and Jane buy an abandoned property in northern Cyprus, hoping to increase its value by £20,000 in 10 weeks. Presented by Gary McCausland".

Obviously, much of the property in occupied northern Cyprus belongs to Greek Cypriots who abandoned their properties and fled for their lives in 1974 when Turkey invaded Cyprus. Turkey still occupies one third of the island. Channel 5 is promoting the exploitation of stolen assets by making and proposing to broadcast this programme. By implication this is aiding and abetting invasion, occupation, theft and the denial of human rights to the Greek Cypriot legal owners of the properties by promoting the concept that this is legitimate "property development abroad".

We as owners of properties in occupied northern Cyprus must complain and protest, we must apply pressure for the cancellation of this programme, we must make our voice heard and email, phone and write to Channel 5 immediately. Hopefully, if they receive a large negative response to their proposed programme they will not broadcast it.

Lysi,

Why don't you first watch the damn show and then complain on what you disagree with. Don't you believe in "freedom of speech". You don't even know what is being shown, and you're up in arms to try to stop it. What are you afraid of anyway??

But you forget that it was only the Annan plan we said YES and of course have the right to say NO next time, just like yourselves I am certain you will understand our reasons for rejecting any proposed plan in the future or will you cause 1000 times more fuss than we have. Dont forget that a balance has to be maintained if we dont want to turn the TC YES into NO while trying to please the GCs into changing their NO into a YES.
