It's challenging, but do-able. The good thing about avoiding dairy products is that you never, ever have to diet!

No cheese, milk, cream or cakes that have butter. It's really not so bad and there are plenty of cookbooks for lactose-intolerant recipes.

Substitute for milk in making bechamel: powdered almonds blended with fresh water and a dash of salt and sugar. Then put it in a saucepan to boil with a tablespoon full of flour until it thickens to the consistency of thick cream. Pour it over sliced aubergines, sliced tomatoes and some cooked pasta and there you go. It's delicious and crisps up nicely in the oven.

Just a caution --- if you are wheat / gluten sensitive as well as lactose intolerant, you will need to substitute wheat flour and pasta with rice flours and pastas.

Another substitue for milk/dairy items would be rice or soya beverages.

I sincerely hope at most you only have lactose difficulties --- a wheat/gluten free diet is absolute hell..... wheat/gluten is used as fillers in many of the prepared foods on the marketplace and you definitely become a label reader when dealing with Celiac's

Thank you all so much! It isnt a serious allergy - just my partner knows someone who had bad migraines and tummy upsets and it turned out it was certain food allergies. Andri, where are the doctors based who you kindly passed phone numbers for?

Thanks Tess

Thanks!

Try the Intergrated Medical Centre just outside Larnaca (Aradippou). 24 823322.

I went to see Dr Georgiou for food intolerences and food out I should avoid all diary, gluten, yeast, chicken and pork. I stuck to the diet for 3 months and my problems disappeared. He will do a complete test for all foods, chemicals and allergens. It was called Vega Therapy. Well worth it!! He's the doc that reports in the Cyprus Mail.

good luck

I have used Dr Christodoulou myself, and did not find him helpful in the slightest. (this is just my personal opinion. I have a friend who swears by him)
