Not very likely. There is no single American among the prospective candidates but there is one Turk, Kemal Dervis.

Could this be more bad news for the Cyprus problems, since Mr. Ki-Moon will be too busy trying to save his nation from Mr. Il who has become Nuclear power of sorts yesterday. Do you think he will be pre-occupied with North - South Korea issues to worry too much about North - South Cyprus issues. It will remain to be seen, but he will be almost in his right to put the Cyprus issue on the back burner, since the last attempt by Mr. Annan went up in a "Mushroom Cloud".

Somehow Mr. Ki-Moon will have greater problems to deal with than a "non-emergency" Cypriot problem. North Korea goes Nuclear, now South may want to go Nuclear, and don't forget Japan. Now Iran will go ahead with their Nuclear, because America will be watching North Korea, when they should have been all along, but the US had to go to war with Iraq. Then there's a good possibility of a major civil war in Iraq, that will draw in others in the region, so more bad news for Mr. Ki-Moon and Cyprus. Of course, Afghanistan is slowly going back to its roots again, to becoming a Taliban State , which will add pressure on Pakistan to get rid of Mr. Musharraf, for helping the Americans to defeat them. Lets not forget, Pakistan is also Nuclear, next to enemy No 1 India, who is also Nuclear.

In the next 4 years, things will get worse for Mr. Ki-Moon, as more nations would want to go Nuclear, including Turkey. I do not believe, with all these happening, and more on the way, that Cypriot problem with population less than 1 million, will take too much center stage, when half the world wants to go Nuclear. It will be like refereeing 20 football matches at the same time, and we know how dirty the players get, when the "ref" is not watching. It is time for the Cypriots to referee their own match, and not be part of the other 20 matches.!!

Couldn't agree more Kikapu. The UN's got enough cr@p on its plate to be getting along with. It is, as you say, up to us Cypriots to do something.

N. Korea is so scary - they are completely isolated from the world and living in this paranoid state of aggression, from what I understand of the .

It's seems like another Cold War brewing.

Yep - Almost as scary as N. Cyprus  - Only Joking!!! :)
No, in all seriousness something has to happen with regards N. Korea. They are imo more of a threat than Iran. It is encouraging that even China, N. Korea's traditional ally, has spoken out against their nuclear tests. This could simply be because China doesn't want too many nuclear powers close to her but given that usually China abstains from international matters this is a big statement for her.

I don't buy into China's public criticism of North Korea. They need to do that, just to please the USA. After all, if the Americans stopped buying "Made in China" products, it will prevent China from becoming a "Super Power" in 25 years, with the money they are making on trade between the 2 nations.

I think, for Cyprus to get more attention from the rest of the world, is to start enriching all their olives and potatoes into a Cypriot Nuclear Bomb.!!!

I think this whole idea of trying to stop other countries from developing nuclear capabilities was a lost cause. Koreas' "testing" was to show they are already there. There is now talk of sanctions, even from China that supplies vast amounts of food to Korea. If these santions are implemented, how many non freindly, non nuclear countries will be tempted to take the place of China
