Can some one please explain the meaning of "LOL" , I have seen it many times , is it a youthful expression of exuberance or can an old boy use it too!!

One of the problems of the Net is that in the absence of intonation of voice we need aids to describe the context in which something is 'said'
hence the use of 'LOL' and symbols such as :-)
