Leave early and expect to take a week to get out of Limassol afterwards!
The traffic, and the lack of any supervision makes going to any event in Limassol more trouble than it's worth.
Island-wide roadshow hopes to drum up enthusiasm for revamped rally
SPARE A thought as you head off on your summer holidays for the organisers of the Cyprus Rally, 12th round of the 2006 World Rally Championship. Though the action takes place from September 22-24, meticulous preparations are now being made for a new conclusion to the world-class event – which is anticipated to be the biggest annual international sporting event hosted by the island.
This year, the final special stage of the rally will be run round the streets of old Limassol. Dubbed the ‘Downtown Special’ or DTS, the tyre-squealing, high octane action will take place on September 24 over a 3.5 kilometre course comprising two loops, which is starting and finishing on the seafront.
Says Clerk of the Course Takis Kyriakides, “Taking in Limassol’ seafront, along with the town’s mediaeval castle, old market, and many narrow and winding streets, the Downtown Special promises to be fast, exciting and unforgettable.”
Yesterday the Cyprus Automobile Association, which organises the rally, unveiled the final route and announced that tickets would go on sale today. Seating will be provided for some 7,000 spectators, with standing room in approved areas for another 2,000.
Taking in the picturesque seafront along with the mediaeval castle and old market, there will be spectator stands and giant viewing screens in place to ensure that no one misses a moment of the action.
The DTS will be based at an all-new Rally Park on Limassol’s seafront promenade. Also the location for the start and finish podium, the Park will be the setting for three days of entertainment with live music, a motor show, food and drink and plenty more to keep the whole family entertained.
Celebrity performers booked for the event include Boy George DJ-ing live and live gigs by Bananarama, London’s Cuban Band, Kalomira, Andreas Constantinides and DJ George Rousos.
On September 24, an entertainment programme will start at 12pm. There’ll be a trial run of the cars at 12.30pm and the actual special stage beginning at 2.05pm. The DTS will be broadcast live on Eurosport.
To promote the event, a DTS Roadshow is touring the island this weekend, selling tickets (£15), offering information and giving the public the chance to enter a prize draw to win free tickets to the DTS.
Where to be
The roadshow began in Larnaca from last night and moves to Limassol today at Drops Beach Bar from 11am-3pm and K-Cineplex from 7–10 pm. Tomorrow the crew will appear in Ayia Napa at Nissi Beach from 11am-3pm and finally at K-Cineplex in Nicosia from 7-10pm.
