Denktash lashes out at US ambassador
By Katya Diogenous

TURKISH Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash has accused US Embassy staff of being sent to the north on a propaganda mission to persuade Turkish settlers to vote against him in the upcoming Turkish Cypriot elections in December 2003.

Denktash claims their “uninvited interference” is unacceptable and the Turkish Cypriot ‘Foreign Minister’ Tahsin Ertougrouloglou sent a letter to Washington requesting that US Ambassador Michael Klosson refrain from visiting the occupied areas and stop giving speeches to Turkish Cypriot people promoting the Annan Plan.

The written statement claimed Klosson’s methods were “diplomatically unethical” and that his presence interfered with the upcoming Turkish Cypriot elections. Denktash labeled Klosson as a “colonialist”, verbally attacked the USA and said that they were paving the way for Turkish Cypriots to vote for opposition parties, lashing out at Turkish Cypriots who he claimed were paid by the US and Britain to support the Annan Plan.
Denktash claimed the US Ambassador’s actions were a result of Washington’s plan to move Denktash aside and solve the Cyprus problem by May 2004.

Denktash’s outburst comes after a speech given by Klosson to Turkish Cypriot lawyers earlier this week, in which he explained the positive outcomes a solution based on the Annan Plan would have, rejecting arguing against objections raised by the Turkish Cypriot side.

The US Embassy was yesterday unavailable for comment on the issue.

Klosson met President Tassos Papadopoulos yesterday. No statements were made afterw the meeting but Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said: “The US Ambassador feels that Turkey’s politics must change in order for there to be a positive response to the solution of the Cyprus problem and he may see Denktash as an obstacle.” Chrysostomides added the American Ambassador was not the only victim of Denktash’s attacks.

Denktash is trying to convince Turkish Cypriots that everybody else is "evil" planning for their destruction.

I don't know if US embassy staff did what he said, but I hope that T/C will be able to see through his lame attempts to remain in power and vote against him.

Actually it seems that he already realized that the great majority of Turkish Cypriots will not vote for him and he is now trying to win the game using the settlers alone. He gives the "citizenship" to as many as he can and accuses everybody else that is paid by the enemy. If this is not unethical then I wonder what is!

This just shows that Turkey can't force its will. They know that it's the people who are voting, and democracy will win in the end.

The problem is that the people that vote are not only Turkish Cypriots, but Turks from turkey also. And these Turks are maybe more than Turkish Cypriots.

So how will democracy win?

Even if the opposition to Denctash wins, this will be because they made several promises to these settlers. These promises if put in action hurt the interests of both greek and turkish Cypriots.
