Why didn't Greece defend Cyprus in 1974?

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

The greek government take the piss out of cyprus everyday, they could offer more diplomatic and military help to cyprus, but greece is shit scared of turkey.
I hope the greek people support cyprus, but the greek government are as useless as the cyprus government :eyecrazy:

Lysi, I dont believe useless is a word to describe the governments of Cyprus and Greece. Not having enough power to convince is a little more appropriate. Nato has a lot to do with why Turkey is able to get away with human rights abuses. Its the other superpowers that wont agree with Turkeys's principles in their own countries when it gets to that point. Question is, is when is it going to get to that point? How long can Turkey push this off for? Cyprus government will wait as long as it has to, to push the issue fairly. They never took a one sided approach on treating Cypriot civilians differently like Turkey is trying to. Bringing up the past is no excuse either to still bicker about how unfairly their future would be. Excuses are not going to solve anything for Turkey, it just pisses everyone hearing about them at this point and the Annan plan. So they know what they have to do to start the negotiating process, and if they still want to play hardball, so be it, but its the Turkish Cypriots that are feeling the repercussions, not the GC's.

Here we go , another bloody foreign flag , untill all Cypriots get these rugs of their back Cyprus will always have the divisions that have caused so much pain and suffering. Why the hell cant' you Cypriots fly the Cypriot flag , I know you all love your "motherlands " and old Miltiades has an advice for you all , Greeks and Turks , piss off to y your motherlands take your bloody flags with you and leave Cyprus to the Cypriots . Cyprus is a nation on its own merit , its not part of Turkey and its not part of Greece. the sooner all hot heads realise this the quicker we can move towards a settlement. What is the f...n point in trying to establish a common ground in order to cultivate a solution acceptable to all Cypriots , when these foreign flags are a constant barrier to creating the ideal atmosphere that will take us to a solution.

I agree, ex-pats manipulate the local divisions and then sit back and enjoy the fall out.

Coming back to the original question. From all that I've read it looks like the Junta coup, and the invasion were planned many years back. The CIA funded the Junta. Basically, Cyprus was always a stratigic location. A newly founded state which wanted to remain neutral during the 'Cold War' and in an area so close to the Middle East was simply unexceptable to the 'great' powers. How long did the military coup last in Greece and what changed? Answer- enough time to give a pretext for the invasion of the island and establish two zones whereby America could operate bases in the north of the island (something which was initially rejected by the CY government prior to the invasion) and Britain could operate it's bases in the south, knowing full well that a divided island concerned with reunification would never contest their legitimacy. Many analysts have commented that an invasion on such a scale would have needed many months of forward planning, it wasn't a sper of the moment thing to secure the human rights of the TC because the Junta took control. When in this world have Human Rights ever been really championed; Rwanda, East Timor, Iraq, Vietnam?

Declassified British Foreign office papers have proven that Britain gave it's approval for the invasion, in fact even assisted the invasion; radar jamming aquipment was used to allow bombings and paratrooper planes to enter CY airspace. At the time only the British, US, Russians, French and Isrealis had access to such equipment - only Britain and the US had this equipment in the area.

Well Miltiades, I have removed my avatar taking your comments into consideration. I love Cyprus, and I'm all for a solution.

Maybe it'll start the ball rolling :D

It seems Miltiades that you rushed way too fast to described and honor this person as your compatriot and one that believes in piece. He has to first explain his comments in another thread in which he implied that "whatever Turkey "gained" with blood, cannot be returned!"

No, I really didnt mate. Your insistence to twist the truth to bring negative feelings between Miltiades and myself will not work.
