Do you know this song? Istanbul not Constantinople

Postby reeshahn » Mon May 15, 2006 7:00 pm

istanbul was constantinople
now it's istanbul, not constantinople
been a long time gone, constantinople
now it's turkish delight on a moonlit night

every gal in constantinople
lives in istanbul, not constantinople
so if you've got a date in constantinople
she'll be waiting in istanbul

even old new york
was once new amsterdam
why they changed it i can't say
people just liked it better that way

so take me backto constantinople
no, you can't go back to constantinople
been a long time gone, constantinople
why did constantinople get the works?
that's nobody's business but the turks!

I am not trying to do anything my friend but I have a few words to say about your reaction.
I am a citizen of the Republic of Cyprus and my birthplace is Istanbul. In all of my Republic of Cyprus IDs and passport it says my birthplace is Istanbul not Constantinople. If Cypriot government accepts it as Istanbul I guess you need to accept it as Istanbul too.

Yeah well saravakos old son, I hate to piss on your chips, but Constantine himself named the original city Nova Roma, as it was a Roman city. There you go! What a git! He was probably a Turk appeaser too.

Or to put it another way, ain't history bloody inconvenient (unless you interpret it in your own "special" way).

Saravakos,

I have always booked my flights from London to Istanbul, if I asked the travel agents for a return ticket from Heathrow to Constantinople they would think I was certifiable.

Move on my friend, don't be stuck in the past.

The Turks like to change the names of places.

The city was named Constantinople for more than a thousand years, then the Turks decided to change it in an effort to hide the fact that this was a city stolen from others and not founded by Turks.

Your passport says "Istanbul" because this is probably what you declared. If you declared Constantinople as your birthplace this is what would have been written on your passport.

RoC government doesnt reject Istanbul as an alternative name to Constantinople. But it doesn't reject the name Constantinople either. And most of the world also knows were Constantinople is.

So nobody said that we do not accept the name Istanbul as the official way that Turks call Constantinople. But why do you want to reject the historical name of the city?

I don't reject it and actually I declared my city of birth as Constantinople
By the way most of the world don't know where Istanbul or Cyprus is so they have no idea about Constantinople.
