Alexios, would you have said the same, if instead of 100,000 settlers, Turkey would have allowed or have brought 500,000 of them, out of which half of them would have been born in Cyprus at any stage during the past 32 years? I believe, when we make certain such claims, we should also know what we are talking about first, and what other implications these claims have towards the rights of the legal people of this country, and not just to throw slogans in order to appear nice and humanistic!
Why does it always have to be the case that the other person does not know what they are talking about? Of course, you are correct, if the settlers numbered 500,000 it would change things, simply because the country would really struggle to absorb that many people. But that is not the argument here, the fact would remain in that case and in reality that these people have rights, the same way that the refugees do. Now I understand that we have a weird circumstance in Cyprus that these people were only 'accepted' if you like, by one of the island's two communities, and as I have said before having to accept these people should be acknowledged as a compromise by the GC community. However, I find it really bizarre that we (GCs) bark on about our human rights and how Turkey has violated them and yet in the same breath talk about expelling the vast majority of these people. As long as their presence does not impact our human rights, and to be honest I don't see how it could, the country can easily absorb these people especially if Turkey assists financially. The fact remains that in the vast majority of democratic countries in the world (there are exceptions e.g. Switzerland), these people have fulfilled the criteria to live in Cyprus.
The same argument applies the other way round where I hear from TCs on this forum that they cannot trust us and so we must be restricted from living amongst them in our own country! These arguments are in my view out-dated and xenophobic.
PS: If I wanted merely to 'appear nice and humanistic', I wouldn't direct the vast majority of my posts on this forum against the frequent attacks on the GC community by members of the forum that seem to regard us as some kind of Nazi race.
