Cyprus Mail: Full support for Turkish crimes (again)

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Postby Bananiot » Mon May 08, 2006 11:26 am

Well, you are right, events can be reported in a number of different ways and in each case public opinion may be shaped. Hoever, the issue here is whether the way the CM reported the visit of Madsakis to Turkey is a proof that this paper supports fully the Turkish crimes (again). Fair enough the CM does not think much of the "mad doctor" as Patroklos would say, but this is one thing and to claim in all earnesty that the CM fully supports the Turkish crimes, is a crime against humanity, imo.

as i said many times , objectivity doesnot exist. from the two above reports one can extrect the basic facts, but one has to admit that they both give a different impression when being read. and thats precisely the point i am trying to make the whole time. NO single newspaper reports "raw facts". bc both of the above reports are suppossed to be giving us "raw facts". but together with the raw facts they do give a feeling of approvement or disaprovement of the event.

Well said Cypezokyli, it's not about whether raw facts are presented that makes something objective, it is the spin that is added by the article. Sometimes this 'spin' is a simple as omitting certain facts which would put others into context thus changing the tone of the article. Objectivity comes from addressing both points of view within the same umbrella. Very few articles even attempt to do this. As for the Cyprus Mail, as we have seen in this thread sometimes they put a positive spin (with regards the GC point of view) and sometimes a negative one. It is easy to come to the conclusion that they are anti the GC establishment but to be honest this is not always the case.

This character could go to a bird watching convention and create a controversy.

He's our very own mini Berlusconi :)

I wonder if it's courage that is motivating him, or the desire to throw red herrings around in view of his court cases for corruption and stealing antiquities.

Anyway, something smells fishy.

Unfortunately this article is typical of Cyprus Mail, not an exception.

I couldn't care less about Matsakis. It is not about him. It is about Cyprus Mail finding another excuse to harm Cyprus. If they could not write the article in a neutral way (e.g. in the way that Phileleftheros did) they should not have written it at all.

I believe that some people should get together and come to an agreement with respected Cypriot newspapers such as Phileleftheros to translate some of their articles and publish them online.
