Insan,

If you are going to make an objective and all inclusive documentary about the Cyprus problem then you should start from the beginning.

The root of the Cyprus problem are the interests of the foreigners in Cyprus. You need to examine the territorial claims of Britain and Turkey over Cyprus, and the role that the Americans played.
If you leave these out you will just be touching the surface.

If you believe that the fact that both Turkey and Britain still maintain in Cyprus 1000s of soldiers and directly control large areas of the island is simply the result of the actions of some Cypriot extremists then your documentary will simply record known events and will not touch the deeper roots of the problem.

All very well Insan, but you just try to get interviews from ex Turkish army officers that served in Cyprus in 1974. It would be interesting to see the response!

Isn't there a law in Turkey that forbids questioning or discussion (unless it supports the Turkish view) of the Turkish army and Turkish policy on Cyprus? In fact it was passed just recently as part of EU harmonisation!

I fear that you will have more to find out from the Greek side than what you may do from the Turkish side and as such I would question the balance of any such exercise. This kind of exercise is something that would require dedication and would perhaps take many years to complete.

The framework looks good but I'm not sure if you'll be able to interview everyone mentioned on the list and even if you interview them, I'm not sure if you'll get the complete truth. For example, it's hard for me to image that an TMT/EOKA guy will admit his crimes (That's why I suggested before that a documentary about ordinary people of Cyprus will be more effective because you'll get their whole story)

You think EOKA/EOKA-B members will be any better? I mean do you really expect, for example, GCs that carried out Dohni massacre to come forward and admit what they did?

No.

Actually it will be hard to even find somebody in the higher levels of EOKA B that will admit that he was a member of the organization.

There are some ex-TMT members that wrote their memoirs and the "struggle" they had given in 50s, 60s and 70s... Of course they have never considered that they committed any crimes, they believe that they struggled something right for their ideology or "cause". So, my intention is not to judge them regarding the crimes they committed. They have association type meeting places in Nicosia and Larnaca. It won't be hard for me to find them. What I'll ask to them are the claims of people, social scientists...

You think EOKA/EOKA-B members will be any better? I mean do you really expect, for example, GCs that carried out Dohni massacre to come forward and admit what they did?

Just one EOKA-B member admitted the crimes he committed.... but as I said my intention isn't question them whether they committed crimes or not. All I want to do is ask them to tell me their stories, answer the claims people put forward...

Actually it will be hard to even find somebody in the higher levels of EOKA B that will admit that he was a member of the organization.

Yeah I think so, because many of them had escaped to other countries maybe I can interview some of them via telephone...

I don't think there's such a law, -mikkie2- ... As I mentioned, I'll only ask them the claims about them; that's all. And I don't think they will avoid answering those claims.

I fear that you will have more to find out from the Greek side than what you may do from the Turkish side and as such I would question the balance of any such exercise. This kind of exercise is something that would require dedication and would perhaps take many years to complete.

We'll see what we will be able to get from both sides....

You are right Piratis... I added that too.

Thanks a lot for your opinions mates :)

Insan,

This project is academically correct but it is huge and will need years to complete!
It needs extensive travelling to Cyprus Turkey and Greece.
It needs the cooperation of a GC journalist (you cannot interview ordinary people in English..)
It needs to be approved and financed by an organisation, and it is easier to get finance for a low cost project than for a high cost one.

Furthermore you have to make clear what the scope of the documentary is. If it is to just present the historical events through interviews and opinions, then it may not shed light to anything new and furthermore it may convey confused/mixed up messages . If it is to reveal the truth behind the historical events, then you need people who can reveal hidden truths, and are willing to be interviewed. And I think you will not find many-if any at all.

Second most important is to make sure that after it is completed there will be at least a few thousands of people (from both communities) who will see it, learn and benefit from it, otherwise it will be useless. As there is a possibility that no TV station might accept to show it, then you must have finance to show it yourself free of charge to the audience at private cinemas, or distribute it on CDs/DVDs or video casettes free of charge.

I tend to agree with Metecyp who said you must concentrate on ordinary people from both sides. At least 50% of your documentary has to reveal the suffering of ordinary people through the events of the past. And by suffering I don't mean only killings, suffering had a lot of issues like losing a job, a property, isolaltion, fear etc. This will make your documentary interesting and useful to the audience no matter what the rest of the content is. The reason is because most of the suffering of the TCs is unknown to GCs and most of the suffering of the GCs is unknown to the TCs. I am sure such a content is "an absolute must see" for the majority of the people of both communities.

Hope my advices are helpful, and wish you every success in this really promising CYPRIOT project.

I completely agree. I may also add that the documentary will be mainly human story of ordinary people and everyone will be able to relate it. You don't have to understand politics or anything like that to understand what innocent TCs and GCs went through due to mistakes of a few nationalist idiots. The documentary will be more appealing and uniting to everyone and it won't fall in the pifalls and division of politics.

Just to put the record straight Insan, the law in question is part of the new Turkish Penal Code which was passed in September, minus the adultery clause.

You will find it in section 306. Perhaps this article from Afrika newspaper will inform you about this.

"
Commentary in AFRIKA warns the EU that in the new Turkish Penal Code there are worse articles than on adultery
Under the title "Worse than adultery", AFRIKA newspaper (16.09.04) publishes a commentary in the column "Letter from AFRIKA", on the adultery crisis in Turkey which was created with the proposed new Turkish Penal Code.
The commentary stresses that with this mentality anyone calling for the withdrawal of the Turkish troops from EU member Cyprus or disagrees with the policy of Turkey on Cyprus will be sent to prison.

The full text of the commentary is as follows:

"Did Turkey propose the law on adultery in order to mislead? Perhaps in order to focus on this and forget the rest? The other articles in the new Turkish Penal Code (TPC) which are proposed for approval are more important than adultery' And more critical' And even more primitive' To make one not long for the 12 September fascistic legislation.

On top of it concerns us very closely. Since we think this issue should be the first item on the agenda of our democratic institutions, let us examine it.

Here is article 306 of the Turkish Penal Code'

It says: "Those citizens, who secure directly or indirectly benefits either to themselves or to others, from foreigners or foreign institutions, in order to engage in activities contrary to the national interests, could be sentenced to imprisonment terms between three to ten years and a fine equal to 10 thousand days. The same sentence will be given to those who promise such thing and get benefit' The reasoning of this article is as follows:

In case, according to this paragraph, one received money or secured benefits to engage in propaganda through press and broadcast, the sentence shall be increased. This includes engaging in propaganda activities through press and broadcast regarding the withdrawal of Turkish troops from Cyprus, or to wage a struggle so that a solution shall be accepted against Turkey, or just to harm Turkey, as in the case of the Armenian genocide committed after the First World War, that is contrary to the historic realities".

It openly says:

Those who will deviate from the official Cyprus policy decided by Ankara will be sent to prison. No one shall be able to say `The Turkish troops should withdraw from Cyprus´.

No one shall be able to recourse to the European Court of Human Rights and complain about Ankara regarding the Cyprus problem. Is this the reform said to be realized in Turkey?

Is this Turkey, to which some European leaders want to `give negotiation date´?

If Europe, does not take the trouble to examine other important issues and continues to stick to the Adultery Bill, and turns a blind eye to these important issues then, it will commit a mistake which will be very difficult to make up for, and the price will be very dear to pay.

Do not say: `This law is for Turkey and it does not include us´. Whatever there is in Turkey, there is here as well.

Is it possible that this law will be enforced in Turkey but not here?

This draft law, in fact once more discloses Turkey´s real intentions in Cyprus. It wants to shut up everybody´s mouth regarding Cyprus.

The only effective force against this law which will be submitted to the Turkish Grand National Assembly for approval on 20 September will be the EU. It will be nice if the EU stops this law as it did in the case of the Adultery.

Otherwise everybody will be in trouble." The paper considers the issue so serious that it publishes part of it in the form of news in its front page leader stressing that the new Turkish Penal Code is full of inspirations from the 12 September 1980 military coup in Turkey. "

"in fact once more discloses Turkey´s real intentions in Cyprus. It wants to shut up everybody´s mouth regarding Cyprus."

Turkey will never set the Turkish Cypriots free. The Turkish army assures and guaratees their "loyalty" to the "motherland. Turkey will never permit the existence of an independent "Turkish Cypriot State". This policy is in line with the policies of the "great powers"- a united problem-free Cyprus, cannot be easily controlled or manipulated. The Cypriots will never be allowed to become truly independent, politically or economically, until enough real EU citizens settle on the island, so they can have a strong enough, "sensible" political voice.
The Annan plan was designed to "cover" the entire Cyprus under the cloud of a "united independent/dependent" state, until the island's demographic character is reformed.
Cyprus, at moment, will remain one of Turkey's additional tramp and "insurance certificate", until all her deals with the West are secured. In other words, NEVER, whether they are allowed in the EU or remain at entry door.

My old friend Insan,
If you have time to kill, go ahead with your research. It's not going to help the situation, where the help is needed. The problems are much deeper, while you intend to deal only with the surface.
Regards.
