WHAT CAN THE GOVERNMENT DO TO CURB SMOKING

Postby miltiades » Mon May 01, 2006 2:43 pm

Most of Europe as well as the US have embarked on a programme to eradicate, or discourage this obnoxious and harmful habit , an impossible task , but huge strides have been made by banning TV adds , smoking in Bars and Restaurants , as well as in most, if not all , offices. Yet the Cyprus government , taking its queue from the Greeks in Greece , has basically taken no serious measures what so ever .Im not in any way advocating that an individual should not exercise his /her divine right to smoke as much as he / she likes , that is their choice , but is it mine to breath his poisonous fumes.
There is a Greek or Greek Cypriot musical programme every Saturday
that being a lover of the Laiko Tragoudi , I so much enjoy.Im sure most of you have watched glamorous women as well as men. who appear on this programme , bask in total satisfaction at smoking continually without realizing that so many young people are influenced by their smoking habits. How many of you think that the Government should take a more positive approach by giving an example themselves by at least not smoking in public as many ministers do.

All you smokers out there who seem to think smoking is COOL have not realised that they stink themselves and the clean air around them for everyone else. These people are totally arrogant. I blame the governments all around the world making "blood money" from the smokers.

im sure alot of smokers do not think its cool, its the teenagers that do, to fit in with their friends. Those that are older are probably trying to give up or wish they had never started, and would much rather spend their money on something else. The problem with smoking is that its an addiction to nicotine and really is as hard to give up as any drug. I have read a ton of books on giving up smoking but as much as its known how disgusting it is and how others dont like it, it does not make it any easier to give up. Cigarrettes are way too cheap in cyprus, i know so many that have had to give up in the uk cos they just cant afford it, im sure its somthing that ppl will always do unless they come up with a wonder drug to stop the addiction, in the mean time all we can do is educate the next generation not to start in the first place.

Are there a lot of smokers in Cyprus? I was in Cyprus last year but didn't pay a lot of attention to it. Smoking is banned in most indoor places in the US. About 20% of the US smokes but it seems EVERYBODY smokes in Europe.

erm there are a fair few smokers in cyprus, you dont seem to see many cypriot women smoke, but there are a ton of men that do. I do wonder how cyprus compares to other eu countries on the smoking stakes?

Smoking causes problems that are very expensive to treat. Cyprus should tax the hell out of cigarettes.

The problem with all the "Blood money" sucking government around the world, they see smokers as their "Cash Cow" , as how to solve the Retirement Pensions / Social Security by 1st collecting their life long taxes on income, then sales tax on cigarettes, then hoping they would die before collecting their retirement.

Long live California for banning all smoking from public buildings and soon from beaches.

On a "lighter " note Im working on a new national anthem for Cyprus which will incorporate Smoking , driving , and of course Souvla. Im certain both communities will find something in common.
