How many are the Turkish Settlers?

How many are the Turkish Settlers?

Postby Sotos » Thu Apr 27, 2006 11:53 pm

Nicosia. According to the latest census carried out in 1996 200,587 people live in Northern Cyprus, Cyprus agency CNA reports.
164,460 are Cyprus Turks, 30,702 are Turks and 5,425 have other citizenship. 137,398 of the Cyprus Turks were born on the island.
The agency notes that a new census starts April 30th in the recognized only by Ankara Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

So based on 1996 census there are 30,702 Turks that were not given the so called "trnc citizenship". Then in there are about 27,000 more Turkish settlers that were given the "citizenship" that were not born in Cyprus. thats over 57,000 settlers so far. How many are those settlers that were born in Cyprus? It seems that settlers can be at least 25% of the population but it could also be much more than that!

cypezokyli, from the figures that sotos posted above the Turkish Settlers were a big percentage even back in 1996. Is there any doubt that today there will be even more? 100.000 is possibly a very conservative number.

Unfortunately their census will not tell us exactly how many settlers are there since settlers are not counted separately in the way that we count foreign citizens in our census. In the same way that we couldn't tell exactly how many settlers were there with the 1996 we will not be able to tell now either. Obviously they are trying to hide their exact numbers and the reason is obvious.

I doubt there would be anywhere near 100000 settlers in the north. I have asked this on many occasions to people more qualified than you guys, the figures given have always been around 40000.

If as you guys say there are so many that simply would mean there would be settlers swamping the streets of Nicosia, Kyrenia, Famagusta and Morphou. That has never been the case in any of my visits to these places.

I wouldnt be suprise if they were more than 100,000 and this is Greek-cypriots main problem. The question to ask is can greeks live with turkish settlers which are a product of illegality.

From a book published in 2004 on the Cyprus problem (wrote by an independent British man) there are around 150,000 settlers from 1974. To many, they won't class some of these as settlers because they were born in Cyprus, but I still class them as illegal residents because their parents still came to Cyprus illegally as settlers, so they are the children of illegal settlers.

This means (according to this book) there are actually more Turks living in the North than TCs. This may yet be one of the main reasons we have not found a solution. Will this not be a problem if the sides re-unite?

its like getting to a taxi in athens, and after the first word (not sentence) the drivers asks : kyprios ?
and you think : s**t he realised....and it will cost me ...

it works exactly the same with tcs.
