How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

What if Turkey hadn't intervened?

What would Cyprus be like today. Please give a thought to the TC's.

Honest answers please.

mrfromng , no one could seriously suggest that a prediction of what Cyprus would be today is feasible.
Im hoping however that you will also understand that using the words " intervention " is contrary to what the entire free wold , including the 200000 or more Cypriot refugees , would seriously interpret Turkey's invasion of Cyprus .It was a military invasion that had been planned a good deal prior to 1974 . Turkish Cypriots are unhappy about Turkey and the settlers being in Cyprus and you know that most of the Cypriot Turks want to live peacefully with their Greek Cypriot compatriots and when they , as well as the Greek Cypriots tell their respective "motherlands " to piss off from Cyprus then we will have a chance to go forward.
Long live Cyprus !!!

Miltiades,

Thank you for your response and wise words. Forgive me for my ignorance but I thought Turkey had legal and moral obligations in protecting the TC's on the island. The word intervention is in my humble opinion more appropriate than your choice "invasion".

Do you honestly believe there would be a single TC left alive on the island if Turkey took a back seat in all this and left it to the other 2 guarantors Greece and the UK to ensure the safety of the TC's?

btw, I agree with you in that we should be left alone to live in peace on our beautiful island but giant steps need to be taken, the biggest obstacle as I see it is the pure hatred of the GC's towards the Turks. What the GC's think of us is worst than what the Israelis think of the Palestinians.

mrfromng , I don know any thing about you but let me make a hazardous quess , and please forgime me for being personall , that you are in your 40s perhaps early 50s . You mean well and you are no doubt a well educated individual. Can you honestly , hand on your heart , beleive your statement that the Greek Cypriots hate the Turkish Cypriots as much as the Israelis despice the Palestinians ? I beg your pardon Sir. Im not the only Greek Cypriot that wants to embrace my fellow compatriiots in our country and live in peace. The majority do want to live in peace. The mjority do not hate the Turkish Cypriots , but hate the fact that a FOREIGN power , Turkey , which has more blemishes on its human rights record than most other countries, is occuping our land , your land . Turkey "intervened on moral grounds " Since when Turkey was known for its morality.
And yes I do beleive that all the Turkish Cypriots would be alive today if Turkey had not invaded. During the military coup orchestrated by the Greek junta - how many Turkish Cypriots lost their lives.
We rely on the educated Turkish Cypriots to see their future in a free Cyprus with no military constraints , and YES
I and many more of my fellow Greek Cypriots want to embrace a Goverment made up of talented , decent politicians irrespective of ethnicity , but repressenting our Nation, not the bloody Turkish Army or the Greek mainland.
Tell me Im wrong but you can see how dedicated to a peaceful Cyprus Iam.
Long live Cyprus.
Ps .I know a great about the Turkish Cypriots , having interacted with them during my long and continuing business life in the UK , and can honestly say their aspirations and hopes are not disimillar to those of the Greeks.

Miltiades, you are good, in fact very good. Your profile of myself is spot on. I am 53 to be precise. You are so obviously a genuine peace loving person and have genuine love and respect for your fellow compatriots. I would have no reservation in living my retirement side by side with the likes of you on our island.

My statement of the Israel Palestinian scenario is based on this. During the referendum I was flicking through every news channel for every bit of news relating to it. Needles to say all the news channels were covering this historical event live, minute by minute. I flicked on BBC, ITV, CNN, FOX etc. What I witnessed brought tears to my eyes and made me give up all hope for ever living on this island side by side in peace with our Greek brothers. I could not believe my eyes, boys, girls of 10-11, teenagers, young men and women, the middle aged and the elderly, every single one of these people interviewed on live world media made it clear they did not want to breath the same oxygen as us TC's.

The important thing you have to ask yourself is the opinion of the 10 year old, how can such a young mind and body have such feelings for another fellow being, regardless of colour or race? Are they taught to hate us at home? at school? Maybe at church?

I honestly believe you have the desire in a fair and meaningful settlement to the Cyprus issue, I hope you are in a position to influence some of your younger generations that have been fed nothing but hatred for us to be more tolerant and respectful to the TC's.

I pray I will live long enough to see all Cypriots living in peace and harmony on the most beautiful island on earth.

Because he/she has not been taught at school what happened in the period betwen 1960 and 1974 and for obvious reasons the history of Cyprus started in 1955 until 1960 and then started again from 1974 and onwards! You see my point! This is what is being taught at school. Or at least what I have been taught! No effort to produce the events as they did happen. A lot of distortion and a lot of misinformation!

mrfromng, I appreciate your comments and I would also reciprocate in saying that living next to a Cypriot would be a natural and a welcome progression of my life as a Cypriot. I understand that many of our compatriots , Turkish and Greek are influenced by schools , churches , mosques and political commentators who thrive on creating an atmosphere of fear by the constant references to past historical events .I believe that all Cypriots would share our commitment to a peaceful Cyprus according human rights to all Cypriots, with no more "extra -judicial punishments , lack of freedom of expression , or lack of participation by all Cypriots in the democratic process of our nation. Unfortunately for as long as 80 plus % of the Cypriots consider , quite reasonably , that a foreign army , that of Turkey is occupying our land , and by that I mean yours as well , then it will take much longer to achieve what you and I so much want. A PEACEFUL CYPRUS.

Hey, The Greek Cypriots resent the presence of the Turkish Army, NOT the TC's who have every right to be there, and every GC knows that!

Peace!!:)
