GSM roaming at the occuppied areas

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

GSM roaming at the occuppied areas

Postby Strahd » Mon Apr 17, 2006 4:26 pm

It came to my attention that when someone tries to roam with his foreign mobile at the occuppied area of Cyprus he gets a very nice welcome SMS saying "Welcome to Turkey...".

any comments on that?

They don't have their own mobile phone companies and they are served by Turkish companies. Thats my guess.

Thats correct Sotos. If i go to the area above the green line with my UK phone i get Turkcell or Telsim which are Turkish operators. There is no independant TC network, they are secretly hoping for CYTA

...and CYTA phones dont work in Turkey! Had to borrow a friend's 'Greek' mobile to make calls there. I assume Turkish mobiles do not work in the RoC.

Yes Svetlana you are correct. This is due to the general boycott that you get between the two countries and it is not only mobile phone roaming. For example with airplanes, Ankara will not handover to the Nicosia FIR but only to the illegal FIR of "Northen Cyprus"...

..and these things benefit no-one, everyone suffers, nobody gains. It is so sad; the vast majority of people want to get on with everyone else and so often National pride/policitians gets in the way.

Well is not that simple... a roaming agreement between two networks for this case a cypriot and a turkish is a mutual agreement. Therefore unless both parties agree there cannot be roaming. Thus because Turkey is not recognising the ROC they refuse to do any roaming agreement.

Well it seems to me that Turkey is slowly but steadily annexing the occuppied areas to Turkey. This would explain the unwillingness of Turkey to enter any negotiations that are binding the independence of the island.

Nah, nothing changed since 74. They control the occupied areas as they always did. They use "Mersin10" for many many years already. This is because no country recognizes "trnc" and RoC post office can not deliver to the north because of the occupation.
