Greek Language

Postby claire » Sun Apr 09, 2006 7:29 pm

Hi all

my family and i have just bought an apartment in liopetri, and after being many times to cyprus we are thinking of moving there full time, although i have some doubts, one of which is that i am a carpenter in the uk and earning a very good wage, what sort of wages could i earn in cyprus, secondly we have a daughter aged 5 and a son aged 9 months and i am a little worried about how they would settle in school and how they would learn greek,i have been told it is a hard language to learn.
Any advice would be really helpful

Many thanks
claire

Claire I dont know about the wages and all as carpenters usually bid on jobs and such on their own sometimes. I only know of one carpenter that works for someone else's company and he makes about 20 cyp an hr. As far as the language thing goes, I had a cousin that came from the UK with her cypriot father and her english mother. She was 7 and she didnt speak any Greek. She went to public school. A teacher taught her privately for a few months and by the end of the year just from school and playing with us she spoke Greek as good as we did. There are also English speaking schools you can consider. Of course I am not an expert at any of the above.

my husband has just started working as a carpenter here, for someone else and is on 500cyp per month but will get pay rises the longer he stays and they have no worries about you using their machines for your own private work. Although the wages here are a bit naf remember it is not as expensive to live here. As fo your children they will adapt quicly and will learn easy children tend to, its us poor adults that find it hard, the brain just doesnt work so well eh? You will love it im sure and your children may find the culture change refreshing.

How much do you earn in the UK clair? If you can set up your own company and you are successful you can earn a lot more. But as an employee you will never earn much with that kind of job here.

Are you planning on working claire? if not then you wont live on that money, but if your husbands a good carpenter then i would think that to succeed would be to start his own business, and a lot of it is word of mouth, and good and fair tradesmen have more of a chance of success. Rembering that charges have to be condusive with the pay earned here. Anyway good luck with everything.
