STING will play in Cyprus at the Tsirion Stadium in Limassol on June 10, it was announced yesterday.
The ultra famous musician has been enthralling rock fans since he led the group The Police in the late 1970s.
Sting, whose real name is Gordon Sumner, played bass and sang lead with The Police until the group disbanded in 1984. After that he quickly became a superstar in his own right, although he is now sometimes better know for outrageous comments on sex than for his music.
His later albums explored various sub-genres of pop and rock and he became associated with activist groups like Amnesty International, helped to found the Rainforest Foundation, and performed in Bob Geldof’s 1985 Live Aid charity megaconcert. Sting also took up acting, appearing in movies including Dune in 1984, Plenty in 1985 and Stormy Monday in 1988. He has written soundtrack tunes for many movies, most famously Leaving Las Vegas in 1996.
There are different urban legends as to how he got his nickname. One says he was given the name by a bandmate spotted him in a bee-like yellow-and-black striped sweater.
Sting is taking Cyprus into his current “Broken Music Tour''.
