Respect. They get respect from me. In some areas of the green line, you have opposing forces really close to each other. I remember visiting a base in the capital for the first time. The post I was in and the Turkish post is about a 10 second walk a apart from each other and a UN sentry post right in the middle with one man in it. Man, I don’t think that UN guy was to happy being stationed there. Soldiers from each side hidden, monitoring each other. You know soldiers are there because you hear them even though you cant see them. He (the UN guard) maintained this nervous smile when monitoring us, he really was in a difficult position. So my hats off to the UN troops in cyprus, for doing their job in a dignifying manner.

To be honest I admire them because lets face it is not the easiest job in world.
I see them as a protection as a reassurance if you like that someone is taking care of things.

i dont think anyone bothers with the peace keepers.... but we need them anyway.

without knowing , they should be quite happy being in cyprus....if one considers the peacekeeping missions the UN is currently undertaking. some are really difficult shit...

I wonder if the UNFICYP command ever asks their own foot soldiers for ideas on how to solve the Cyprus problem. If they're in the midst of it each day (literally), they might have some interesting ideas.

I read somewhere that in the 1960's pre division British "peace keepers" ran spying missions etc to try to set up the Green Line.

I think it was one of those news pieces from the BBC where they release old documents.
