Feel free to talk about anything that you want.

Are you talking about the Thomson one?

No Soto, it works ok here and I also like the BIOS software. Mind you I don't use the built-in firewall or any firewall for that matter so I guess every user is a unique case.

why you are not using a firewall? You depend on software ones or you don't have one at all. I think thats very risky!!

You don't need a firewall. You can setup your browser (explorer in my case) via Security, Privacy, and Advanced settings, to make it do most of the work for you. The one or two nasties that do get past, over a period of say a year, get quickly sqashed with powerful software used as required. I'm a System's Engineer.. :)

I don't know, I feel safer with a hardware firewall. If something gets blocked that I don't want it to get blocked I can always open that port. What powerful software do you use? Usually powerful software that run all the time to monitor everything consume resources. What settings do you have on your browser by the way? If you are too strict with Privacy and security settings some websites might not work good.

That’s right, software that stay resident including firewalls consume the bandwidth and that’s why I never use anything like that. It would take me too long to write about all my explorer settings Soto so I’m going to give that a skip but the software I use on the rare occasions that I suspect an attack include… X-Ray, HijackThis, CWShredder, ATF-Cleaner, and System Mechanic. No anti-virus software needed at all... :)

Yeah, I believe when Cyta say it's not wireless it's because they haven't updated their call centre with the new details. Is like in the UK with NTL when they used to say XP was not supported with my cable modem. Well of course it worked (it was the one NTL *gave* me themselves and the engineer setup with my XP machine!), they just didn't know how to support it. At the end of the day the speedtouch one has a great big antenna sticking out of the top of it! Oh, and all ports and wireless worked out of the box for me (I currently have all 4 ports used up). Note that MiVision uses a port, but just get a decent ethernet switch if you want more (I split MiVision with a media streamer I own and didn't want to use wireless on and everything works fine).

As for getting into the modem settings I couldn't get in because it was asking for a username and password. In the end I phoned Cyta who wouldn't tell me it over the phone. In the end a bloke actually turned up at the door with it written on a piece of paper. Seems a bit over the top. As it happens I never bothered as when you try to get to the more advanced settings (when it asks for the login and password) then it says it will wipe current settings before continuing. No thanks (I need it for my job). Thought I needed to change 54g settings at the time, but turns out I don't need to now, so I went no further. Anyone know what actually happens if you continue? Don't want to have any downtime basically.

As for the modem itself, I generally get it stuffing up quite often. Seems it cocks up with the DNS server (downloads and links to things like Skype still run, but websites do not appear) every now and again. Just needs to reset the modem. But lately this seems to be every other day. A little annoying. Plus everytime you do it then MiVision normally completely has an eppy. Sometimes changing the channel will refresh it, and sometimes using the power button on the remote to reboot it will work, but most times you have to unplug from the power to restart it. Plus without going into the advanced settings I don't know how good it can be. My old Linksys was pretty good, with even some homebrew firmware to improve things (such as broadcast strength which could be set to a level where you always got a really good signal).

Cheers
