I understand how ayjvee took that. Unfortunately there are still people quite ignorant about the cyprus problem. so dont be too hard.

when you travelled to the turkish side of cyprus, did you sign their form? its usually in turkish.

I had to phone the CTO in London with this question for a client only last week. They said definitely no problem now if you have that stamp in your passport. Up until 2003 it would certainly have prevented you entering.

Enjoy your holiday.

Talk about better late than never, the guy already had his hols, what good is this info anyway.

Its sad how so many people still unaware/don't give a shit about the cyprus problem and visit the occupied areas like it was a legitimate holiday destination. I wonder how they would feel being in the shoes of the GC who were oust from their homes so these people could enjoy it.

Ignorance is no excuse, habouring a criminal, aiding and abetting is a crime and thats what these people who visit the occupied areas are doing. I say have a heart and consider for a moment the suffering and feelings of the people that have lost out in all this.

enough said.

THE DEFINITIVE ANSWER.

I have many friends who have all used both Ercan and Larnaca Airports frequently (Depends where they are going). Their passports have a number of Ercan stamps yet no one has encountered a single problem going through Larnaca Airport. As long as you have a EU passport neither will you. Had anyone been arrested because they had an Ercan Airport stamp in their passport it would have been trumpeted in the GC press. Nothing has ever appeared.

I do recall reading in the early days, not long after the gates opened, that a GC used Ercan to holiday in Turkey. He was briefly held by the GC police on his return but they were told by the Attorney General that it was now no crime.

Enjoy your holiday. If you have a hire car you can even bring that through the border so that you can see both sides. If you don't have a hire car, a day trip by coach to the North is easily arranged.

You don't sign a form. You write down on a slip of paper your name, passport no. and nationality. This is checked by the authorities and date stamped. your details being entered into a PC. The paper is re-stamped when you leave. It's a sensible precaution so that nutters (see other entries in this forum) can be barred from entering the North if they have caused problems on a previous visit. Lately it has also been used to check f their are any outstanding speeding/parking fines.

As best as I remember (I don't have one with me now) the three items you need to write in are in Turkish and English.

There was a report in Cyprus Mail on 9 Sep 2004. An extract:

"Neophytos Constantinou was found guilty on August 20 on two charges of exiting and entering the republic from the illegal airport of Tymbou in the occupied north.

The court decided not to sentence the 56-year-old since a conviction would have violated constitutional provisions concerning equal treatment, arising from the EU’s Green Line Regulation on the free movement of people within the EU."

You can read the whole article at: http://www.cyprus-mail.com/news/main.ph ... &archive=1

My interpretation is that RoC still have the rule on the books as a frightener, but they daren't use it because they know that it would be ripped up by the ECHR and the EU rules on free movement of EU nationals.

Sorry Observer but your info is wrong. All car hire companies have a clause in their contract that says, "if the car is taken to the North side of the island, then the insurance is null & void."
You can buy car insurance at the border, but it isnt worth the paper its written on, and its only third party.

I wouldn't risk it!!!

Even Cypriot car insurance doesn't cover you once you enter the Occupied Areas. Its geographical area is only for the Republic of Cyprus
