teaching english in cyprus

Postby jazzy1 » Sun Mar 12, 2006 11:55 am

Hi Guys,
can anyone tell me roughly how much an english teacher gets paid. and if there is much demand for this either in a school or privatetly, I am looking to move to Cyprus in the summer and am trying to work out finances.

Also it would be great to hear from anyone who has made the move already (good and bad) from the uk.
Thank you

You have to join a queue /waiting list of 1500 people with Masters degrees waiting for a job getting peanuts.

You are better off going somewhere else if you are a teacher. Especially Dubai. Cyprus currently requires more accountants big time. Lots of opportunities for qualified tradespeople: Carpenters, plumbers, electricians and pimps.

there are a lot of private institutes that teach english to cypriots that might hire you sooner. I am not sure how well it pays but its an option. I have a friend who owns a chain and he wouldnt mind hiring a woman at all heh. Do you speak greek at all?

well its actually my husband who the teacher. he is a quailified sports teacher (Degree with honours) but was thinking of taking a Teaching English as A foreign language course. he doesnt have a degree in English but was thinking of doing this as an extra thing, I understand it wouldnt be a main income but just to help us out a little.
He is greek and is fluent in the language.

I mean I could get him to dress up as a women if it would help?? ha ha

as for me I speak a little greek but as we are hoping to move I have hired a teacher to teach me the language.

lol no. He doesnt have to dress up as a woman. I said that because you said considering you are a woman you wouldnt get too much work. This person I know runs a chain of private schools that teach english as a second language. I know that he used to hire people in the past that either graduated as english teachers, or studied to be teachers of any kind in englad or US or have any degree and english as a second language. Of course, the person would need to speak some greek so he can communicate with the students.

My Husband is fluent in Greek so will be able to communicate.
