Differences between Greek and Turkish Cypriots

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Postby pumpernickle » Tue Mar 07, 2006 9:28 pm

Pirateus, you betray a classic cypriot prejudice against the englishman.....that he is some kind of ignorant oaf who comes to cyprus for the sun and just complains.

You couldnt be more wrong about my wonderful, amazing self if you tried, so don't even try to pigeon hole me.

I am completely adjusted and integrated, and am more than friends with a large number of cypriots. Your image of some bitter twisted fool all alone in his apartment is a false one. Sorry to shatter your cosy myth.

My views on the cypriot and his or her ancestry are a matter for discourse and debate. And of course, congratulation for its sheer incisiveness and credulity. I back my sh1t up, although in oft crude and colourful vernacular.

So, I'll get back to my job of speaking my mind.
You can get back to your job of not speaking your mind, and moderating the Cyprus Forum. Thanks.

What prejudice against englishman? I never generalized about people from UK. I either talk about the official policies of the UK government, or I talk about something very specific, in this case you.

On the other hand you keep generalizing and throwing offenses against Cypriot people. Do you tell your numerous freidns things like "looks like he's about to pocket 30 pieces of silver and disappear with a wench and a bedouin tent tucked discreetly under his odourous armpit."?

btw, In this section my job is to express my opinion and not to moderate anything.

how coincidental that your job is also your hobby.

Give up the expressing and stick to the espressos. Mine's a latte with skinny milk and whipped cream.

cypezokyli, I wouldn't say that your comparison is very successful. Germans must be among the most cold people in the world (no offense). If you were using another mediterranean nation (e.g. Italians) then the contrast would not be so sharp.

the reason i chose the germans is because first I know them better, and second , michael refered to diametrically opposing cultures between turks and europe. if germans are not europeans , who is ?
i could have even chose sweden.

it is true that with the meditereannean (which excludes most of europe) people we have more things in common , BUT, besides some greek islands of the ionian see, we lived together for 400 years!! we didnot liive together with italians, or spanish. so, when till you people give me, what cultural similarities we have with any country, that we dont have with tcs i will believe you.

....
for the great helene -christian (two words that will always punch each other when put next to each other) , with the "nation" ideas.
people who used to live in kapadokia during the ottoman empire, used to :
speak turkish
but,
where christians.
and
even though they wrote in turkish
they used the greek alphabet to do that.

classify them, in which "nation" they belonged. and guess were they are today, or how their culture has been altered

GREEKS are those who share a common cultural and language rather than those who share a common blood.ISOKRATIS

did the "greeks" that lived in the ottoman empire, from pelloponese, odessos, pontos, thrace, and cyprus shared a "common culture" and a "common language" ?
was it more difficult for a christian cypriot - and a muslim cypriot to communiacate, than it was for a christian cypriot with a muslim thrakian ?
did you ever listen to the thrakian dialect ? how much can u understand from it?

the greek language, has so much evolved in different regions of the ottoman empire, that communication was easier geographically than ethnically. the "common language" has been a creation that was forced upon christians, after the creation of the greek state - through mass media, and mass education. the same works for the "common culture".

Recently met a TC in Miami who like alot of his friends and family in the occupied areas want the Turks out of Cyprus. You need to dig at the Turks not the TC's. I was embarrassed to hear that this guy and his family spoke english, turkish and greek. They want to live together with the GC. Its Turkey that is the biggest stumbling block.

So in answer to your original question. The difference between TC and GC is purely religion.

We are all Cypriots at the end of the day!!!!!!!!!!
