I believe most archeologists believe Ledra to be centred roughly where the (old) General Hospital is. Almost certainly not where the current "old city" is. This was probably created by the Lusignans out of marshy flood plains of the Pedios (sp?) river which they diverted as a moat, drying out the land. The Venetians perfected the job, of course, by creating the walls and moat that are still standing. The hospital area is slightly higher and would certainly have been drier, fewer insects and generally more comfortable. I doubt whether there was much habitation north of Eleftheriou Square (Oops, nearly gave my age away with Metaxas Square!!!) before the Middle Ages, unless the topography changed; I seem to remember reading that the region was a hotbed of ague (malaria) and other fevers.
