Macketterry,

On the contrary, I do not see Turkey as the demon and the TCs somehow deluded victims. The TCs were just as instrumental in my eyes to fueling the conflict as Turkey. In fact I consider it crucial that we reach a compromise with Turkey, I simply feel that the compromise should be a fair one. For thirty years Turkey had insisted that the Cyprus Problem was solved in 1974, she then changed her tune in time for Cyprus' accession to the EU. For years before 1960 she insisted that Cyprus was an exclusively Turkish island. In the period between 1960 and 1974 she was simply waiting for the right circumstances to invade the island and establish a military bridgehead. The only moves towards recognition that a Greek Cypriot community with rights exists on the island have been in the last few years, before that not a scrap. Turkey has began softening her stance against the GCs, she simply needs to understand she need to do more. Even to meet the GCs halfway so much more is required. Greece was just as guilty of this crime against the TC community back in the 60s and 70s but has since effectively taken herself out of the equation. Turkey, however, remains very much involved, not least because of the vast numbers of troops she maintains on the island but also in her highly-coupled links with the TC administration. If she insists on being part of the problem, she must also be part of the solution, this is why I advocate the GCs holding as hard a line with Turkey as she does with them until a fiar compromise is reached.

In the north the so-called problem is shrugged off

erm.. maybe that's coz the people in the north are the ones who have stolen half of Cyprus and make a living by selling on stolen property?! (..and can even afford Cherie's hourly rates to help them continue to do so..)

if you boys/gals are not interested then feel free to bugger off to another forum.. but some of us do care and do intend to take back our homeland.. so we will continue to talk about the problem

Okay, fair enough, you hold your hard line. But the balance of power is not with you in my opinion, so you will still be expected to make some compromises.

Tony, you are being dopy now. Go to the north and look at their standard of living. It is way below you smug Greek Cypriots' standard. So don't go twisting the truth just because a handful of TCs can afford a new Range Rover.

Go ahead, prattle on and on about the past ad nauseum. It won't change a thing. Meanwhile, the rest of us have got lives to lead. Drop me an email when you've solved your 'problem'.

Maybe our discussions won't change a thing.

But things in Cyprus will change and the problem will be solved, assuming Turkey's EU accession process continues.

This I believe is the one and only thing that will determine whether a solution will be found. IF Turkey manages to get close enough to accession and the only thing blocking her entry is the Cyprus problem, then she will accept a fair solution, which will also be acceptable by GCs.

In the opposite case, the status quo will remain (possibly improved partially through legal means, a la Titina/Arif) or perhaps an Annan-plan type solution will be imposed (which I believe is even worse than the status quo).

macketterry,

You sound like one of the many Brits who is benefitting from the invasion because you now live in an affordable place in the sun, which is something the UK cannot offer. Your comfortable in the knowledge that if anything happens you can always fly back to the safety of your home country. You see no problem because you have lost nothing, it's not really complicated is it.

Now if for example, Argentina had succeeded in taking the Falkland Islands or the IRA had succeeded in annexing Northern Island, or perhaps if Britain had been under occupation for even a small period of time during WWII (like many European countries were). Perhaps you and others like you may have been better for it, because then you wouldn't see someone else's pain and suffering and remain smug about it.

djtrax98, just like the one who made this thread you don't give a damn about Cyprus.
You could just as easily live in the UK the rest of your life. Isn't it? You would do everything to avoid serving in the army. Did you serve?

Quote:
If Only everyone was brought up like my dear mother and father raised me.

They raised you how? To accept the violations of the human rights of others? Yeah, congratulations to them Rolling Eyes

I would like to see how you would react if your rights and your property were stolen.

I rest my case.
I thought this forum served as a means of communication relating to cyprus?
Therefor can someone please explain to me how 'MODERATORS' such as Piratis can justify posting PROPAGANDA on website comments such as what he has done towards me?
I find your comments very resentful.
I DO CARE ABOUT CYPRUS AND I DO GIVE A DAMN ABOUT MY COUNTRY.
WHAT I DONT GIVE A DAMN FOR IS NARROW MINDED OVER ZEALOUS PATRIOTISM SUCH AS WHAT YOU ARE DISPLAYING IN LAUCHING A DIRECT ATTCK ON ME, stating that i could just as easily live my life in the UK for the rest of my life. The very fact that i live my life in Cyprus would serve as an indication that i dont want to be living in the UK or anywhere else. This is my home and i love it dearly. Yes i could live in the UK people there at least can see both sides of the coin something which narrow minded dreamers such as yourself cannot see.
NO i didnt serve in the army. You want to know why? I will tell you.
Because i was given a choice. I chose not to serve in the army. And the reason?
BECAUSE I DONT WANT TO BE BRAINWASHED INTO BELIEVEING THAT JOINING THE ARMY WOULD DO ME AND MY COUNTRY GOOD.
BECAUSE IT WOULDNT.
GOD Forbid if there ever was an invasion again, the Turkish forces would WIPE us out faster than Mcdonalds take to serve you a cheeseburger on a Sunday afternoon. Secondly, i dont believe in joining an institution which is based on patriotism rather than defence.
And thirdly: My parents did NOT raise me to accept any violations of human rights. For your information i am working towards a career in Human Rights within a European Justice System. A European Justice system which is objective and constructive in its aims, which can see both sides of the coin WHICH YOU MY FRIEND CAN CLEARLY NOT SEE.
In my statement i never justified the Turks taking over the land or settling down in it. My point was merely that Cyprus as a country was partly to blame in the political turmoil which took place leading up to the invasion.
WHAT YOU CANT UNDERSTAND is that indeed cy was to blame partly for what happened.
LOOK AT THINGS OBJECTIVELY.NOT EVERYTHING IS CUT AND DRY THERE ARE ALWAYS TWO SIDES TO EVERY STORY.
Piratis' statment has reitterated something i said within my statement though. Society in Cyprus tends to be somewhat misleading ending up with the majority of the population thinking the way Piratis does.
WHICH IS WHY THE PEOPLE WHO LOST THEIR HOMES AND LAND WILL NEVER GO BACK TO THEM BECAUSE PEOPLE LIKE YOU THINK THIS WAY.

ALL I WANT OUT OF THIS SITUTATION?
To reunite both sides in a COMPROMISED WAY , so my many dear friends from the north who i made at university have as many rights as i do to live on this beatiful island side by side with me, like it used to be before. So that racism fades out and peace sets in, with all past tenses forgiven but not forgotten.
i am not justifying what happened in any way shape or form.
I SUGGEST MR MODERATOR BEFORE LAUNCHING PERSONAL ATTACKS ON ME OR THE WAY I WAS BROUGHT UP BY MY FAMILY YOU THINK ABOUT WHAT I HAVE SAID AND RE READ OVER MY STATEMENT PREVIOUSLY. I CAUSED NO OFFENCE TO ANYONE I MERELY POINTED OUT A FEW SOLID FACTS.
FREEDOM OF SPEECH IS STILL VERY MUCH EVIDENT IN TODAYS DEMOCRATIC SOCIETY, OR ARE YOU THRIVING TO REMOVE THAT FROM THIS FORUM AS WELL FOR PEOPLE WHO DONT SDHARE THE SMAE OPINION AS YOU?
DO NOT THINK YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO GET PERSONAL OVER MATTERS SUCH AS THIS WHICH ARE BEYOND YOUR BRAINWASHED COMPREHENSION.
To everone else who reads this. SEE WHAT I MEAN?

I feel sorry for the families of all those who died trying to defend the island during the invasion. Because GCs are doing an injustice to their sacrifice. I'm a long standing believer that just like pre-1974 the GCs biggest enemy is not the TC or even the Turks of the mainland. It's a cliche but we are our own worst enemy because the vast majority of GC look at their own gains rather then the gains of the wider population. Not realising that the profit we make now will be paid for by the next generation.

THANK YOU THATS THE POINT I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO MAKE.

We must realise this and strive to put it right. There is no future in fighting between ourselves this is partly the reason we are in this mess now. we are a nation we must unite and strive forward to reach a deal suitable to all sides so we can all live happily ever after. However as long as no compromise is willing to be met by EITHER SIDE(Note key words EITHER SIDE?) then the situation will continue to be as it is now.

I agree with you my friend totally.

If everyting i am saying is wrong and if none agrees with me then perhaps the author responsible for the article below written in Greek can translate it into English for everyone else to understand?

No? Ok i will do it for you.

'Piratis why are you talking with this fool? I dont think there is any point. I am tired. I think we should make this forum site for Greek people only including those who are invloved with tourism etc etc.. If the foreigners in Cyprus want to use our site to express their opinions they should then need to learn our language first. Oust gypsies!'
