I really have no indepth knowledge as to the origins of T/Cs in Cyprus and i welcome any recommended independent sources for information.
I want however to share a little experience with you.
When i was a little boy(ages ago:):) i spent a lot of my time at the house of my childless aunt and Godmother. Many times whilst there,my Godmother was visited by a T/C lady of about the same age as her.Especially in the summer, this lady was there atleast twice a week. She came from the nearby village of Chrysochou.I really dont remember her turkish name but,my Godmother occasionally used to call her Maria!!.I didnt pay much notice at the time. The people in the region of north westen Paphos prior to 1974 payed little attention to politics...The 1974 events took place and the lady never appeared again.I left Cyprus in 1977 and came back in 1986.After a few visits to my Godmother, memories came back and i remembered Maria...so i asked her why she called her that. She said to me,that Maria, was a cryptochristian and so was most of the village of Arodes where her family came from before marrying in Chrysochou. She also told me that in older times the people of Arodes though Muslim, carried out christian ceremonies as well as attending muslim ceremonies, especially funerals wherby they would bury the deceiced in the muslim tradition first but afterwards bring an orthodox priest to carry out a christian sanctus.!!
I dont know if this was a typical situation in Cyprus, but having asked older people i guess it was a rather common situation many years ago in the specific area.
