Has Anyone heard of a Greek veto of Turkey in the EU?

Postby kalamaras74 » Sat Feb 11, 2006 6:53 pm

I did a search to see what is going on in response to Jack Staw's statements about Cyprus and I stumbled on this Hurriyet article, and I am not so sure that it is fact.

http://www.hurriyet.com.tr/english/3919715.asp?gid=74

"Greek leader Papadopulos, currently on bad terms with Britain because of their support of Turkey’s action plan, is now commonly referred to as Don Quixote (who fights against windmills) in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). In protest against Britain’s decision to recognise the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Greece has put in a veto regarding Turkey’s accession to the European Union. Greece will neither hold meetings with the USA, who are in support of Britain’s decision. "

I can't find any news like this anywhere else? Has anyone read about this? I think this paper is wrong or being highly speculative.

Hurriyet is one of those turkish tabloids. It is not a respectable news source
I prefer
Turkish Daily News
Zaman

Britain has not taken a decision to recognize the Turkish Republic of Nortern Cyprus, rest assured.

kalamaras74, I wouldn't worry. This ridiculous piece is littered with so many errors it's laughable:

1. Papadopoulos is the president of Cyprus not the 'Greek leader'.

2. Britain hasn't supported Turkey's action-plan but her initiative in putting something forward for discussion.

3. Britain hasn't decided to recognise the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

4. Greece, therefore, is not protesting against this.

5. Greece has not vetoed Turkey's EU accession

6. Greece has not refused to hold meetings with the US.

7. The US is not in support of a decision that Britain hasn't made.

I think we should all be worried, however, that this tabloid newspaper appears to be able to get away with misinforming its readers so blatantly on such vitally important matters.
