Apodimi voting in Cypriot Elections/ the Referendum

Postby Agios Amvrosios » Mon Feb 06, 2006 1:57 am

Cypriots Living abroad have traditionally had to fly in to Cyprus to exercise their democratic rights.

The large cypriot diaspora is almost equivalent to the current population of Cyprus but there have been limits to their democratic rights.

I've been lucky enough to have the opportunity to travel to Cyprus very often and I have been able to stay in Cyprus for extended periods so I've voted in elections and the referendum. But from what I understand you cannot actually vote if you a citizen living abroad except in very limited situations. - and it should change.

The people of Cyprus cannot even imagine the Contributions Cypriots living abroad have made to Cyprus. In addition to sending a constant flow of large amounts of money back home Cypriots abroad are unofficial ambassadors who tell every one who wants to hear about what is happening in Cyprus.

well aios amvrosios, dysi suddenly and only three months before the elections suggested voting through the internet.
it is a very good proposal...but thee months before...?
i believe the reason they did it was not for those who are abroad, but bc this time they have real money problem and cannot pay for their voters to come.

still it is a good proposal. most probably they ll forget it till three months before the next elections

I've heard that Akel fly many people on voting junkets whenever there's an election or someone in Akel royalty is marrying off their kids. My Aunty's fiance is a rabid akelista. He goes to cyprus every second day.

Maybe I should join a couple of these political parties to land a couple of travel junkets to Cyprus.

I think Cypriotgreeks living abroad should agitate to get their voting rights, preferably by internet,or by postal vote.
What better way to make sure people stay in touch with the political events in Cyprus.
After you get the right perhaps they will extend it to Cypriotturks living abroad. Those who want to vote will have to keep abrest the social and political happenings in Cyprus.Inevitably there will be political alliances between the two Cypriot communities which can only help build the rapport necessary for living together in the future. So much can be done for so little imagination. we need to ask our political masters what is stopping them from doing what we can see necessary from thousands of miles away. :(
