A refugee is someone who has fled war, violence, conflict or persecution and have crossed an international border to find safety in another country. Refugees are seeking refugee, hence why they are called and are classified as a refuge-e. Maybe something clicked in your pee brain now.

As soon as they find safety, which is the first safe country they arrive in, usually a neighboring country, they have to announce to the authorities of that country that they are applying for asylum. Otherwise they are there illegally and may be deported back to their country of origin.

Back to square one. this is not down to individual but as a Cypriot back in the 60s there was no hotels in the villages so if somebody was unable to travel to town till morning, they normally were given a plate of food and a bed to sleep on with breakfast in the morning. When it comes to international agreements, if a country has signed the law, they have to take in anybody that turns up at the border with or without papers and give them a safe place to stay. Sure they have to investigate whether the person is correctly claiming asylum and if not you can send them back.

in 2022, about a 20% of all applications came from Syrian nationals. The other 80% came from south east asian and african countries.

the top ones making up the bulk of first time applications coming from, Nigeria, congo, pakistan, afghanistan, bangladesh, camaroon, somalia and india.

an important point to consider here is that Cyprus has received most first time applications for refuge in terms of % of its population. Standing at a whopping 15%. More than any EU country and even Turkey. Who boasts hosting 3 million Syrian refugees, which is only about 3% of her population and has to extort or blackmail billions out of the EU to not open the flood gates.

You want to talk about obligations and responsibilities to refugees while turning a blind eye to the weaponize of them by Turkey on the EU's doorstep? I would have thought a man of your virtue would be shouting at from the roof tops about this.

Although only 4% of first time applications are granted asylum, the process can take months on fast track and years if there a re appeals. arrivals arent really going down either and these people need benefits in the meantime while their application is being processed.
