Peyia

Can anyone give med detailed info about Peyia? The only things I can find on the various websites are that there's a old well there, and that people like to get married there. I believe it's a very popular place in summer.
I have been there but my knowledge of the place is sketchy, despite the fact that I've bought an apartment there :? :? :?
So if you know the place and have some good tips, I'd be very grateful :?:

Thanks, Sotos. Well, as a foreigner and a sort of Brit (ex-pat the last 30-odd years) it should suit me fine. However, I was really looking for a bit more detailed info about living there, and what to do and see. :D

Peyia is popular with foreigners as it has good views (the village is on a slope), is close to Coral Bay, only 20 minutes from Paphos, convenient for Polis, has supermarkets, banks and some good tavernas. In spite of the foreign invasion (the European one I mean), it has retained its Cypriot charm. Good investment!

Yeah good investment ! It is very closed to Paphos and there are modern appartments built around the hills. The place has a nice view towards Paphos and the beaches and I believe it is a nice place due to the multicultural environment !

There is more crime in Peyia (and Paphos) than there used to be, but the population has risen by 50% in the last five years or so. When you have large villas, many of them unoccupied for much of the year and Eastern Europeans who work here for slave wages on nearby buidling sites, crime is inevitable.

Not to say that it is only the Eastern Europeans who commit crime here but it is mainly foreigners, I suspect.

I presume this crime thing is not special for Peyia, but on the rise all over Cyprus?

It's certainly a problem in most other European countries now, and I have to agree with Svetlana that it appears to be illegal (and legal) immigrants that are responsible for a lot of it.

Over here in Norway organized criminal bands from Easter Europe, the Balkans, North Africa and Turkey, are flourishing. Their activities include drugs, shoplifting and organized begging in addition to various other swindles and scams. Also building workers from Poland among other places, come over and work for slave wages and many are temped by the wealth they see around them.

Anyway it appears to be a thing we'll have to live with now that the EU has opened the borders.
