Conflict resolution is not rocket science. There are many examples around the world where it has been very succesful.
So first of all, what is it?
Conflict resolution is conceptualised as the methods and processes involved in facilitating the peaceful ending of conflict and retribution. Committed group members attempt to resolve group conflicts by actively communicating information about their conflicting motives or ideologies to the rest of group (e.g., intentions; reasons for holding certain beliefs) and by engaging in collective negotiation. Dimensions of resolution typically parallel the dimensions of conflict in the way the conflict is processed. Cognitive resolution is the way disputants understand and view the conflict, with beliefs, perspectives, understandings and attitudes. Emotional resolution is in the way disputants feel about a conflict, the emotional energy. Behavioral resolution is reflective of how the disputants act, their behavior. Ultimately a wide range of methods and procedures for addressing conflict exist, including negotiation, mediation, mediation-arbitration, diplomacy, and creative peacebuilding.
Now where are examples of conflicts that have been resolved. We need not go far. Lets take the Northen Ireland conflict which is the one we were part of and see if we really understand how it was resolved?
There was new Labour Northern Ireland minister Mo Mowlem who was suffering from cancer and was having radiation treatment which meanr she lost all her hair. Consequently she was wearing a wig. Before starting the talks she was advised to meet the IRA emebers who were in prison becasue without their agreement there can be no peace. So off she went to meet them in prison. There they were a government minister and murderers sitting in the same room. She started with a fantastic gesture. She took her wig of to display her bold head and simply said "Now, whats the problem gentlemen? The rest is history.
Does the aveage person understand this question.
