My point was IMHO it's ridiculous to suggest that an organisation as large and diverse as NATO would ever agree to invade Russia. It's simply a fabrication, and in my view an insultingly juvenile one, for Russian domestic consumption, as an excuse for their brutal invasion of a neighbouring country.

I'll give you credit though. That's a new twist on "Putin our saviour". His invasion of Ukraine is apparently to save us all from WW3. I'm sure what must now be the tens of thousands of Ukranians killed and the millions who've fled their country will understand and appreciate their suffering has all been in a good cause.

Let's be honest here: A buffer between Nato and Russia would be good not only for Russia but for everyone, and his argument was valid. His number one scope was obviously to safeguard Russia from WW3, which at the same time would also save the Europeans from such an eventuality. The whole issue was discussed with Nato for months. Russia was ignored. So I am asking you once again: What other choice did Russia have other than invade Ukraine causing all that suffering?
You are asking if all that suffering has been for a good cause.
We will simply never know.

What's happening in Ukraine is the clearest example of why NATO membership has been so attractive to the old Warsaw Pact countries.

Nato just capitalized on the fear of the people of ever going back to communism. That fear was illogical considering that Russia never objected to any country's accession to the EU. This by itself proves that Russia is not aiming at re-establishing a communist empire.
However the tables have turned to the point that the threat is now on Russia having Nato at it's doorstep. The actual enemy is the USA using Nato proxies, not the European proxies themselves. The USA been 13000 miles away has nothing to lose using proxies to cause mayhem, however Russia has every reason to fear from that.
So what happened now in Ukraine will certainly make some people come back to their senses and forget about joining Nato. At the same time even Ukraine will be allowed to join the EU, just to prove to themselves that there's absolutely no fear from communism anymore..
