Which degenerated person other than Paphitis would ever wish to become an "American"?
Is shipping fruits and nuts from Singapore, enough of a reason to abandon Holy Rosy Australia to become an "american"??
There are many reasons. I've never been happier professionally, because it's Americans have a really great corporate ethos and are team players. There is very little bullying and skullduggery here. Only one thing is important. Whether you can do the job and how well you can do it. If you do it good enough or well, no one will give you a hard time, and they will bend over backwards to further your career.
There is a little nepotism especially among those who come from the US Military as a lot of these guys progress very high up the ladder and end up being in charge of many things and control recruitment, and they tend to look after their mates. But, these guys are also generally good and competent so it doesn't matter.
You come to America for the opportunities. Also, the Aviation Industry and infrastructure here is the best in the world. safety Standards and training is very high and simplistic in its approach, due to its mammoth size, but also extremely innovative. It's a very exciting place, and the Airspace is very easy to navigate and operate in as its practically all radar environment (radar seperation and not procedural) from coast to coast, and flights are all highly automated from ILS Initial Approach FIX waypoint to ILS Initial Approach Point FIX, and in high density you are always radar vectored to the IAP. All we do is turn a dial.
The best think about America, is that there is no RACISM. You have no idea what a breath of fresh air that is. You can be black, Hispanic, Greek, Italian, Cypriot and no one cares. They got no problem advancing people with diverse backgrounds as long as you have the abilities to preform for them.
US Military pilots are also very good. the Americans have perfected (invented actually) the best Crew Resource managment practices in the world. So mixed military and civil crews operate well in a tightly controlled environment. Very black and white and FCOM based. Australia and UK (I realluy can only speak about Australia, and presume UK may have the same issues) are not as well progressed.
You live in a fantasy world. You should have spent more time in the ghettos of St Louis and the southern states like Georgia, Alabama, cities like New Orleans etc to get the whole picture. Don't confuse the conditions at the airlines with the overall work conditions in the US.
And don't confuse life in NY or Philadelphia with the overall life in the US.
Also a huge number is on drugs on daily basis. I would say more than 50%. Add the alcoholics and you 'd get the true picture. And I don't mean known drugs only, it's everything you can imagine from known to cheap unknown shit....
And secondly, you asked who would want American Citizenship. Well it just so happens that everyone wants it. Everyone I know was actually very jeolous I have been fortunate enough to get permanent residency. Everyone thinks its a Green Card but it isn't quite the same. Nearly though, or at least close to it. I can convert to a Green card, which will then guarantee citizenship. That is my aim. So that my kids can inherit it too, by default.
Why? Well, American Tertiary Education opportunities. The US has many universities in the top 100. 3 or 4 in the top 10 from memory - like Harvard, Columbia and so on.
But it's not just that. Career opportunities are second to none. It's definately a very vibrant place. A good place to be, or at least have access to.
My daughter said she wants to go to harvard. Ambituos. Well as a parent, I am going to try and give her every chance of achieving this ambitious feat. I don't care what it costs either. I will pay for her.
Son, well hopefully he follows in my footsteps into the United Flight College in Arizona. No I never attended this college but I can get him accepted easily. Nepotism and all that will work in his favour.
Australia will always have a better life style than the US but that depends on what you want. Others just want the New York life style which is attractive to certain types. Maybe not for me though. But I think my kids love it. It's just a buzz for young people in particular.
You may prefer the life style of Australia. Although, you wouldn't survive in Australia with your political views. You will be an outcast in Australia.
But no matter how good Australia is or can be, it just isn't a match for the US. I mean we are comparing a country with 26 million people to a country of some 350 million. US is a massive market. A huge country with a lot of opportunities and massive industries and it leads the world in IT, and Tech among many other things like banking and finance, Engineering, Medicine and so on.
In addition to that, Americans have certain attributes in their psyche and mentality which is incredibly innocent, and refreshing. They are definately different to Australians and most of it is in a good way too. You can thrive here if you have the right attitude and work ethic.
Gun Laws are a bit of an issue though. You can buy anything, including military style. And there are shootings almost every second day. So that's pretty scary. Scary for the cops as well, which is why they too can be a bit trigger happy. But on the other hand, that just shows the extent to which Americans will defend their consitutional rights and freedoms. Which leads to one of the best things about America with regard to freedom of speech, freedom of the press and libel laws etc etc.
Nevertheless, it is clear to me that the authorities need to tighten gun laws, but they won't because NRA is too powerful. No American politician will be game enough to fight the NRA because the NRA will throw millions to destroy any politician that tries it.
