Which degenerated person other than Paphitis would ever wish to become an "American"?
Is shipping fruits and nuts from Singapore, enough of a reason to abandon Holy Rosy Australia to become an "american"??
There are many reasons. I've never been happier professionally, because it's Americans have a really great corporate ethos and are team players. There is very little bullying and skullduggery here. Only one thing is important. Whether you can do the job and how well you can do it. If you do it good enough or well, no one will give you a hard time, and they will bend over backwards to further your career.
There is a little nepotism especially among those who come from the US Military as a lot of these guys progress very high up the ladder and end up being in charge of many things and control recruitment, and they tend to look after their mates. But, these guys are also generally good and competent so it doesn't matter.
You come to America for the opportunities. Also, the Aviation Industry and infrastructure here is the best in the world. safety Standards and training is very high and simplistic in its approach, due to its mammoth size, but also extremely innovative. It's a very exciting place, and the Airspace is very easy to navigate and operate in as its practically all radar environment (radar seperation and not procedural) from coast to coast, and flights are all highly automated from ILS Initial Approach FIX waypoint to ILS Initial Approach Point FIX, and in high density you are always radar vectored to the IAP. All we do is turn a dial.
The best think about America, is that there is no RACISM. You have no idea what a breath of fresh air that is. You can be black, Hispanic, Greek, Italian, Cypriot and no one cares. They got no problem advancing people with diverse backgrounds as long as you have the abilities to preform for them.
US Military pilots are also very good. the Americans have perfected (invented actually) the best Crew Resource managment practices in the world. So mixed military and civil crews operate well in a tightly controlled environment. Very black and white and FCOM based. Australia and UK (I realluy can only speak about Australia, and presume UK may have the same issues) are not as well progressed.
